I didn't do well again this week. My weight stayed the same, but measurements went up. A friend had encouraged me to try low-cal, and even though it had never worked for me in the past, I gave it a try. So it's back to Atkins for me, and try to stick with it and avoid the carbs that seem to always land on my behind.

Pat, be very careful with Atkins diet. I am not sure if you are diabetic, but if you are Atkins is dangerous and can throw you in diabetic ketoacidosis, which will make you very sick. If you want to do a low carb diet South beach is a better option. I am diabetic and the South beach is working well for me. Basically throw out all the white foods, enriched flours, and eat green healthy low fat foods. Good luck! Sandi in FL

Saturday was DH's birthday. We went out with another couple(the husband's birthday is the same as DH's) to lunch, a matinee and then dessert.
I was pretty careful at lunch, which was one of those Chinese buffets. I stuck mostly with veggies and some chicken. We never buy snacks at the movies anymore-the prices are obscene. We saw "Hancock" and we loved it. Will Smith is a winner every time.
It was the dessert that was lethal. We went to a diner that's famous for it's cheesecake so of course I had to have a piece. It was WORTH it!!! Yum!!
We didn't eat dinner because we had no appetite left  . But then the kids came in with an ice cream cake   I had a very small piece plus a brownie that DIL made.
I didn't weigh myself yesterday. No way no how :? But this morning, I got on the scale and (drumroll here) I didn't gain anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whew. Now I'm back on track. 8)

Yeah Eileen - We have special days we just need to celebrate but you did great and your reward was no gain. After painting Saturday there was no way I was going to cook so I ended up with a Whopper and Onion Rings. I don't know if I was too tired to eat or just so used to smaller portions but after eating half of each I was stuffed. I stopped, wrapped it up and it is still in the refrigerator.
Yesterday I was in the mood to cook and tried another new recipe that will not make it to my Favorite Family Recipes book but I had some fresh peaches I needed to use and my husband loves fried peach pies. I cooked the peaches with just a little sugar and managed to scorch them just a little bit. Instead of frying the pies I baked them and they were very good. I did eat a hot one with 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream. My mom was the queen of Fried Apple Pies and it is one of those things I regret not having her teach me how to do while she still could.

Sandy, peach pies sound yummy. Isn't frozen yogurt healthier than ice cream? But I imagine it doesn't taste the same. I have never heard of fried peach pies, must be a Southern thing.
Eileen, you have to celebrate birthdays. It is a given. Glad you watched your portions, though. Judy in AZ

I do keep Blue Bunny fat-free, no-sugar-added ice cream on hand, for when I simply must have something sweet. Also, my DD is hypoglycemic and does best when she stays off of sugar, so it's a treat for her when the family gathers together (like the 4th of July). I also like Murray's sugar free cookies. But the diet that works best for me is low-carb, high fiber. That's the only way I've managed to lose weight. I'm mildly diabetic, so I stay away from sugary desserts (even jello!), potatoes (only a small potato at a meal), and limit fruits. Ideally, only 2 a day are allowed. I was not aware before my diagnosis that I have to count milk products and fruit as carbs! Practically everything but meat or non-starchy veggies counts as a carb. I have 2-3 carbs per meal, and 1-2 carbs for a snack in-between meals. And when I do eat carbs, I try to make them whole-grain, or high fiber. Seems to be working, as my diabetes remains well-controlled.

There are a lot of nice low-carb vegetables, thank goodness. I'm not diabetic, for which I'm very grateful. I do try to stick to meat, poultry, or fish and low carb veggies most of the time, but I always have Atkins low-carb Advantage bars around, and some of their Endulge bars as well, and always toss one in my purse when we go out so that when everyone else is eating dessert, I have mine, too and don't feel deprived or tempted to eat the high-carb desserts.

I tried the squash recipe this weekend and it was very yummy, even hubby ate! Thanks again for sharing the recipe Sandy. Anyone have any other good veggie recipes to share. I am so tired of green beans and salads. I am willing to experiment some so I don't miss my taters and bread so much. Sandi in FL

Sandy no offense but maybe at this point you should be thankful that your mom did not pass on the fried apple pie recipe. Think of the calories!!!! I may have the recipe though I have several of my grandmothers cook books packed up and my sister and mother have the others I know for a fact there was a fried apple pie recipe in there I will look for it later this next week. Rachel
By the way my Dr just took me off salt milk and artificial sweeteners. Water and ice T are pretty much all I can drink for now.

Folks I have a complaint...Y'all are having a seriously adverse effect on me! Last week I decided to start "eating smarter" (the word diet is not in my vocabulary) and I've started looking at treadmills. Something y'all probly don't know about me...I am a seriously lazy female. I don't even walk to the mailbox! I would rather starve myself than exercise. However, now that I'm 50 things are different. So...thanx for the motivation. I think.

Sherry, We are just dangling the hook, it is up to you whether or not you bite. We just want everyone healthier so they can quilt longer.
I laugh at my husband. He drives the truck to the end of the drive to get the paper and the mail but will then go downstairs and walk 20 minutes on the treadmill. It's only about 200 or 300 feet.

Good for you, Sherry. Thinking about it is the first positive step.
I don't have a treadmill anymore, but I do walk my golden retriever every morning for 30 minutes. I got in the car to see just how far it was and we walk 1.6 miles every day very early in the morning before it gets too hot, say between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. Then my exercise is over for the day. If the mood motivates me, I can go to water aerobics twice a week, but the mood REALLY has to be there, more often NOT.
So, start by walking to the mailbox, then go a little further on down the street, and a little further the next day and so on. Before you know it, you will be fit and trim. Judy in hot and humid AZ

I have to share this with you all - I've been meaning to walk more, but have a g-zillion excuses. Today my DH had to take the truck to town for minor repairs; I asked him to drop me off at "4 corners," and I would walk to the LQS! Took in my 1/2 hr walk, and spent 1-1/2 hrs brousing the quilt store! I feel so clever... BTW, the walk was delightful. Down a country lane through woods and light traffic, birds singing, perfect temps with a cool Lake Superior breeze! It is a good day.
