I had some fun yesterday too because I put my spools quilt back up on my wall and put the borders around it so that I could see how to do the corners, only to discover that I was 6" short on the top and bottom! I had forgotten that they weren't the same size as the sides and cut them all at the same time. I had planned to put in cornerstones rather than make the top and bottom the way Edyta suggests in her book which is a straight piece top and bottom. So that's what I will be doing now. By adding extended cornerstones. Hopefully the continuous vine and applique pieces will cover up enough of the seam so that it's not noticeable. And then of course my exquisite FMQ will do the rest.
I'm sure you'll make it work Rita. Can't wait to see it!

Mug rugs! I was just going to whip these things out. I was so inspired to try some things I'd been wanting to do and having just returned from TQS Lancaster I had the newly aquired skills that were going to make my ideas happen. Well, you know what they say about good intentions,  so you all know where I am headed. The first one got done, but it is just too butt ughly to go anywhere. Learned what not to do so the next one is going better but it's too big for a Mug Rug. I've got to circle the wagons and make some new plans. Just not as far along as planned. ops: ops: ops: I need a new plan. So I am sleeping on it. Good night!

Lois, are you being too hard on yourself? Can your mug rug be that ugly? I can relate to your knowing what you won't do on the next one... I just finished my first one and I do like it, but my perfectionist self is already evaluating the lessons learned... Despite that, I'm determined to make this fun, even if they're not perfect, and like you, I'm trying new things that I've wanted to try. Sleep tight! Maybe your ugly one will grow on you tomorrow!

Yes, Lois, sleep on it. I think you had a sampler that you also called 'butt ugly' and it finally worked out with the addition of a colour ( green, I think). Some one may love it, but, the hard part is who to send it to, who you think might love it!!

I tend to look at people's profiles and they often say what colours they like and I look at what they've made and posted. Sometimes this helps. Sometimes.

Ditto to what Renata and Terri said.

I'm sure tomorrow it'll look better Loise. Sleep tight and have sweet dreams.

Lois, please forgive me but I just have to ask (I think it is from too much time being a LL with Rosemary)--is that a little baby bottom or a hairy old man bottom? Cause you know--if it is the baby bottom--you might really like the mug rug in the morning.

Lois and Renata - I would be the happy recipient of any of your mug rugs that don't meet your personal standards!! I know they'll be beautiful to me!!

Lois, Now that you've had a good sleep, What's the verdict?

If you still think its ugly, how about adding embellishment to tie colors together, hide ugly seams, or whatever... This might just turn into the best one!
Make sure you have fun with it!

Or, you put it aside and do something completely different, and then, maybe, in a week or five, you look at it and say, I know just what to do with it... If then the great idea is to bin it, bin it it is... But give it a bit of time. Maybe you'll get a nice surprise...

I agree with Lotti. More than once I've regretted slicing something up because it's ugly. Turn it over and do something on the other side

I have made 3 mug rugs so far. Each one is different - although two use a similar idea. I was all set to start sending them off in order but then I decided to hold off and see what they would all be like in case I got better as I was going along. I now think that's a bad idea. I made those first two with specific people in mind and did my best at that time. And I really like them.

I think we should try to keep the spirit of the mug rug in mind - this is meant to be a fun project where we share a little of ourselves with each other. They are not intended to be award-winning art quilts. They are not to be judged by their recipient, they are to be admired for being done and arriving and will take pride of place on my table with my favourite mug on top with a nice cup of tea and hopefully a bun or cake too!

So, put a smile on your own mug ( do you use that word to describe faces) and and make a fun mug rug.

Thank you everyone for your encouragement. You are right I am my own worst critic. I stew over getting things started because I haven't figured everything out. So I procrastinate. Part of my problem is a fear of making a "butt ugly" project. Well now that I slept on it and looked at it again I can tell you it's still "butt ugly".   You are suppose to be laughing with me not feeling sorry for me! This is a good thing. I've done it before and I'll do it again and once again I learned "It's not the end of the world". In fact, "It's a New Day" and today I am grateful having learned from yesterday's mistakes. Today my focus will be "simplify" :!:
