    Background fabric

Hi there, I am in Australia and had great difficulty finding Art history 101 background fabric. I purchased from the US online but only realised after it had been shipped that I had bought the canvas version. I am still waiting for it to arrive but having not seen either fabric, will the canvas work? I hope so!! Otherwise I will have to try and sell it elsewhere.
    Thanks! Julie

I was asked if canvas is the fabric in the Kit. It is not. I don’t know what the canvas feels like but if it is home decorating weight I don’t think it will work.

I see that the quilt is about 70" square. Could you tell me how wide the background border is? I know it's way early - however, I don't want to cut into the border while making all the little house backgrounds.
I want to reserve that import part of the background for the end.
          Thanks.

Patsquilts, Wendy's instructions say to cut 7 strips of border fabric, 5" wide x Width of Fabric, for the borders. This will mean they are cut cross grain and uses 1 yard of fabric. Some prefer to cut their borders lengthwise grain. that would require 2 yards, 72", cut 4 strips 5" each. Then you use the rest of that 2 yards for piecing the background in the various "blocks"--since all the background is cut up monthly for the various units we are making each month.

thanks, that's what I needed - I prefer to cut the full length strips, so
              I appreciate you.

Is the background fabric Art History 101 actually a panel? Trying to locate some and it's sold per panel. I'm not sure if this is the correct fabric or not.

No, the Kit fabric is not a panel. Someone else bought the panel fabrics, showed it in a post and I think decided not to use it. What was shown was somewhat darker than the Art History 101 included in the Kit.

Use the Search box up above to find that discussion. Use Panel as your Search, you will find it.

4.25 yards of fabric seem like a lot yardage is some of it for backing

No, none is for backing. One yard is the final border, the rest is used for piecing

I have gotten some of the canvas in the Art History 101 as it was the only piece I could find of this fabric, and I was surprised to see that it is not a heavy as I thought it
would be. It is not like "canvas" at all. I am planning to do a practice house to see how it will work.

I made a Small House #2 with it and It seems to have worked fine, it is good to work with and only just a little
Thicker. It does seem to have a looser weave to it so I wouldn't prewash it because I think it would ravel ( or fray) quite a bit.
