    Background fabric for borders

Should I cut my borders out first to ensure I have long enough strips from the background fabric? I’m worried I might not have enough length by the time I’ve cut the background fabric for all the other bits. Can someone advise the dimensions needed for the border strips please?

Ktmosedale, It is best to browse the previous posts because a lot of times you can find your answer without even posting. I put a couple screen shots with where, how and the answer from Barbara Black. I would cut them first. HelenW

Hi! Just copied this reply Barbara posted when I realized I bought the wrong fabric.

Thank you Barbara. My new question is do you think I should I cut strips for the borders before cutting into my fabric for the individual months. ( I am the one with 5 panels instead of one cut of background fabric. )

The instructions for cutting borders is to cut seven 5” strips, width of fabric, then piece them to fit the quilt. So look at the panels to see how those 5” wide strips will look as the outside border. If you do cut them in advance be sure to clearly label them so they don’t get lost or used for something else.

I am curious what you report about the panels as borders. I hope they will work for you.

ebmotha, Can you upload a picture of your panels. I might be able to play around with it in my EQ8, not sure, but would give it a try. HelenW

Hi Helen. The panel is very similar to the “real” one.
I was unsure for awhile but I am going to use it.
I have eq 7 but although it is installed on my computer
I am afraid I know very little about how to use it.
I would love to see what you could do with it if you had the time
          And energy to do it

I have been learning much more about Electric Quilt from Kari Schell of Tech Know Quilter. I did go ahead and upgrade to EQ8 and I am glad that I did. There are also tutorials on the Electric Quilt website.

If I want to use a different background fabric for the inner rings and the outer ring could you give an estimate of the amounts needed, please?

Ebmotha, I posted your panel next to the background fabric in the kit. If the lighting in your photo was good, it looks like your is a few shades darker in general. What size
are your 5 panels? If you remember could you tell me the company that manufactured them and the name on the panel? Won't get a chance to play around for a few days
but my mind is still thinking about it. HelenW

Hi Helen. I got this picture off the website where I bought
It since my photographs leave a lot to be desired!
                    The fabric is
Art History 101 - Treasure Hunt Multi Digitally Printed Panel
by Marcia Derse for Windham Fabric

I believe the panel is 30inches by 40 inches. I will double check that when I get home. But I think I am right. I actually have 6 panels since I knew iwould be short when I measured the 30 inches.

Ebmotha, I just took the screenshot of the Marcia Derse fabric in the kit photo for the center of the pieced quilt and took your panels and cut a piece in EQ8 and put it as the
border. You can get an idea of what your panels would look like as the outside border. To draw the whole inside pieced area and put your panels in the inside area would take
a really long time. I might think of some other ideas. But this is it for today. HelenW
