Thank you, all! So, the quilt is now at the longarmer’s and it is being beautifully quilted. But, we have a B-I-G problem!!!!! HELP! When she spritzed off the blue marker lines she had drawn, some of the colored gem appliqués began to bleed! I am very puzzled about this because I pre-washed the fabric, and only used Pigma pens on them. I had ironed these pieces numerous times. AND, I had spritzed and blocked the top, before passing it on to the longarmer. She is working to remove as much color from the quilt as possible, but I will probably have more work to do once the quilt is home. Suggestions? The background is an off-white batik with a blue/lavender hint of color here and there. It’s mostly a blue appliqué that bled, but she said a pink one did, too. I know that a couple of the prominent quilters have cover up dye bleed with fabric paint, and still won a ribbon. What I don’t know is what they used.

          Any suggestions will be appreciated.

(Wendy, the inspiration came from some aboriginal dot painted mandalas that I found on Pinterest. Fell in love with the square in a square in a square idea, and plugged in the Hoffman gems fabric for the dots. Used their coordinate fabric for the non-gem appliqués.
It’s pretty much an original design, though.)

            Dawn,
What a bummer to have bleeding happen to such a wonderful quilt! As for why it happened with your pre-washed fabric. . .well, it could be that your water is different than your longarmer's water. When I had bleeding happen on The Chicken quilt on my prewashed fabrics, I decided that over the 10 year period our water had changed. I know that it had--we now have chlorine added to our water. This could be the reason why the fabrics bled for her and not for you.

As for solutions. . .think about using a thread color around that area that blends with the bleeding. If it is too late to do this add, think about painting over the bleed. . .if it doesn't come out with a blue liquid Dawn detergent. (I had better luck with Dawn than with Synthrapol; but, I tried both products.) If that still doesn't work, think about adding some handwork to those areas. . .like French knots or some hand stitches of some sort. If that isn't your think, paint more of the background so that it looks like your background was that color or add some bling to force your eye to other areas of the quilt. I am so sorry that bleeding happened. Wishing you the best!!!

What a shame. I applied more fabric when the run showed on my quilt and used a white pen. The fabric was most successful, the paint shows up in certain lights so I can't show it grrr. Good luck.

Thank you for your explanation of the design inspiration

                Hi Dawn -

What a bummer! Vicki Welsh is the industry expert on fabric bleeds in quilts. Her blog post about it is here:
                https://www.colorwaysbyvicki.com/sav...ing-quilt.html
Donna James had this happen to her award-winning wholecloth quilt a couple of years ago. She painted over the areas. I don't remember for sure, but think she used the Inktense pencils. She had talked to Bethanne Nemesh to figure out what to do, so you could also try contacting her.

                Good luck!!

Okay, back to the bleed. I discovered the color that bled when my longarm gal spritzed my quilt, was a pen that I used. I did a lot of “artistic” coloring on some of the fabric jewels, so that the zig zag on the raw edge did not show. I THOUGHT all archival, pigment, waterproof pens were the same. Wrong! Stick with the Pigma pens! Lesson learned. Since I used both types of pens throughout, I have no clue which areas cannot be exposed to water. Sad! Anyway, I resorted to a very mild wate/bleach solution. I had no choice.

But, my longarmer did a fantastic job! I am super pleased!

Now, on to the IMQE. There were 24 chosen teams. My partner and I were not one of them. There were 6 Reserve Finalist teams chosen, just in case some quilts do not get there in time, or whatever. We were there! I am a Reserve Finalist. Her is the quilt I made. It is 18” square, and a picture of where I live, complete with my deck.

This is not the photo that I submitted. Totally not square!

                      Time for bed! Later all!

They are both super beautiful quilts, Dawn. As for the pen... we live and learn.

As for the IMQE, received the information that I was one of sixteen “single entry teams”, where only one of the team members managed to enter the quilt, and therefore not qualified for the selection. Not that I had great hopes as I have discovered that mini quilts are not (yet?) my thing, being way too impatient and inaccurate and way too fond of veering off the set plan  :silly:

Her is my entry. Hoping to get it sent to my partner soon.

Sooooooo looking forward to seeing all the quilts.
                        :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

You all amaze me! I check in often, just not real talkative right now, that’s actually strange, no????

I love that I can drop in and out of conversations and see what others are doing.

Thanks to everyone of you for keeping things moving along.

Thank you one and all! I see that my jewels quilt posted upside down and not very clear. I am postiing another so that you can see the quilting better, AND help me with some suggestions for a name. I don’t have a clue with this one!

And, Lotti, that is sad that your partner’s quilt did not get entered! It is an AWESOME quilt. You spent a lot of time on that one! Love it!

Dawn, each photo you've posted of your jewel quilt is so much fun to look at! It is gorgeous!! I'm glad you were able to work around the pen issue. Thanks for teaching us to watch out for that! And your mini is so wonderful. I feel calm when I see it! Congratulations on being a reserve finalist.

Lotti, your stars are amazing! So precise and colorful. I'm sorry your partner didn't participate. She is going to treasure the quilt you made her.

Luann, good to hear from you! Hope all is well.

My partner and I are one of the reserve teams. I don't wish anyone ill, but it would sure be cool to have our quilts travel with the others! My partner lives in Rome. We both like more modern quilts so decided to do a take on a Jean Wells style quilt. I had fun making this quilt "To Rome With Love." The color in the close ups is a more true color of the quilt. My husband and I took so many pictures of the quilt trying to get a more clear color version. I think it looks more yellow due to the yellow in the quilt competing with the other two colors. Or at least it's a good excuse! hmy:
