    Lois,

I'm not sure if I showed you the mug rug I made with the leftover fabrics from the commission piece. I sent it along with the big quilt and the lady loved it!

I love making these little guys. The hardest part is to get started. To not think too much, just sew stuff together. They are such fun.

Love it, Geneva! Thanks for sharing! It was very thoughtful of you to send that along to her.

Geneva I love your mug rug. It is so cheery. I am wanting to learn to machine quilt and I wonder where you get your inspiration. Do you mark your lines and if so what works best for you?

                Fun muggie Geneva

I love it too Geneva. Those fabrics are luscious! Judy I could be wrong but I would imagine that Geneva quilted the mug rug in an improvisational way using her walking foot. If you look at the dark blue fabric on the left you can see a serpentine line, I think that's where all the subsequent lines to the right had their starting point. If it was me I would have used the edge of my walking foot as the guide for each following row of stitches. What she's done is really lovely and a lot more fun than just doing straight lines. The walking foot is a great tool in the arsenal of quilting and I use it a lot. Geneva, please correct me if I am wrong. :cheer:

Geneva, super cool idea! It's the little things that show we care! I made two T-shirt/sweatshirt quilts for a friend, from her twin's lifetime collections. They were headed off to college. So, I made her a quickie single layer lap quilt with the scraps from the girls's sweatshirts. After she and her DH dropped off the girls at college, a day's drive from here, she said she wrapped herself in the lap quilt and cried all the way home. I was so glad I spent the extra time on it!

Thanks everyone for your nice comments on the muggie.
Judy, Rita is correct. I love using my walking foot for quilting. I can do small amounts of FMQ, but prefer using the walking foot. I watched a show here on TQS with Jacquie Gerhing (hope I spelled that right!) and then took a class from her on Craftsy. Basically I just think about where I want the stitching to flow from and to and draw a line with chalk. I only do this if it is a larger quilt. On the muggie I just sewed from top to bottom at an angle. I love using the serpentine stitch on my Bernina. It's so easy and looks nice. I've also started using a wave like stitch also. I used these 2 stitches combined with straight stitching when I quilted the breeze and ocean on the commission quilt. The walking foot has measurements from 1/8" up to 5" inches or so, so I can follow the lines however wide I want it to be. On this muggie I had fun with a straight stitch on the side making squares and rectangles by going off the end of the muggie. I have done so much walking foot quilting that I can quilt most anything, even curves. I've learned to be able to start and stop on a stitch to make corners crisp. Here is a close up of "The Doors" (which will be hanging in the local quilt show this weekend!). All of this quilting was done with a walking foot.

Maybe someday I'll be good at FMQ like Nancy and others, but for now, my walking foot and I are BFFs! I guess it's like my being afraid of taking the training wheels off!

It's rainy and cool here, and I'm recovering from a cold. A good day to stay in and quilt!

                      Take care,

The colors on "The Doors" are so vibrant and happy. Great work with the walking foot too.

Love "The Doors"! Your sense of color and composition are outstanding! I love your walking foot quilting. I love straight line quilting as well as FMQ. They both have their place. I'm thinking about getting a new Bernina so that I can have the serpentine stitch, too. It's wonderful!

Geneva, Thank you so much for all the information. The Doors is fantastic. I guess I just need to get over my fear of ruining a project and jump in the deep end. so
