Looking at the photo of Edyta's threads on her web site, I would guess that MasterPiece color # 154 (Sculptor's Clay) is about the same value. Although the color chart makes it look much lighter, color # 153 (Parchment) is another good medium value.

I use more Sculptor's Clay than any other color.

For darker value fabrics, I like # 160 (Chocolate Kiss) and for lighter values, # 151 (Canvas).

Those three values work for everything I piece, and I don't have to buy a whole lot of different colors. Your needs may be different.

I made a quick run to the LQS yesterday to get thread for quilting a current project and to pick up some thread to use for pieceing the HSTs. They did not have the aurifil that Edyta suggested, and no one around here carries Superior, so thinking (incorrectly) that the auriful Edyta recommended was a 60 wt, I purchased YLI Soft Touch 100% long staple cotton. It it a 60 wt, 2 ply thread. I have never used this before. Honestly I have mostly used the cheaper threads, like Coates and Clark, etc, because it is what I have access to. The YLI is advertised for being perfect for piecing. Do any of you use this and do any of you know if this would be okay to use for the HST exchange?
I am sooo excited as this is my first ever exchange and I don't want to screw it up!

And another question I have is... are most of you using neutral colors for your light fabric or just any color that is light?

Margo, I know the pp block I sent you sticks out like a sore thumb (sorry!). I don't want to make the same mistake again!

Margo, can you recommend a color in Masterpiece that is close to the color of Aurofil that Edyta uses. I just got done using some Aurofil and I think if I ever sewed with it again I would have a mental breakdown. It caused havoc with my machine.

MARGO - FOUND AN EARLIER POST WITH COLOR 156, BUT THIS IS A GREY, I THOUGH EDYTA USES A TAN LIKE COLOR. I NEED A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT COLOR OPTIONS. I AM HOPING MY PAPER IS HERE TODAY AND I NEED TO CHECK OUT WHAT THREAD MY LQS HAS.

Edyta did use a tan color, which is fine for the fabrics she likes to use, but gray is also one of those colors that blend in well. If you want a different color in MasterPiece, try #152 Bisque or #151 Canvas. Also, #153 Parchment and #154 Scluptor's Clay.

As you can see, many of us are big Superior Threads fans. You have plenty of time to order from them. You will really enjoy their threads, and they are great people to deal with.

First of all, Kalynn, your block does NOT stick out like a sore thumb! It's wonderful, and works beautifully with all the other blocks! Thanks again!

The YLI cotton will be fine for piecing the HSTs. The 60 weight is even a little thinner than the Aruifil or the MasterPiece, but it's also a good thread.

Actually, I think that we are splitting hairs (threads?) here worrying about 50 versus 60 weight. You just want something that is thin that won't take up bulk in the seam allowance. I would not recommend King Tut for this project! I love the thread, but it's just too heavy for piecing these HSTs.

Here's my 2 cents worth on AURIFIL thread....

Aurifil is made from Cotton Mako', a thin extra long staple Egyptian fiber. I have used the 50 wt. Color #2325 (tan) for
years for both machine and hand piecing and applique' because it produces a fine stitch with less bulk in the seam and very little lint. The 50 wt. is equal to Mettler's 60 wt. (the brand encouraged by Bernina) in thinness (is that a word?) which is what I used prior to finding Aurifil. I know Bernina calibrates their machines with Mettler thread, which is why most Bernina dealers sell it. Any thread will produce lint...that's it's nature...some more than others depending on the fnishing techniques of the manufacturer. Also, sewing machines will "like" certain threads better than others...so it's a matter of finding what thread suits you and machine best. I'm not against using Superior thread at all...in fact, there's some of it
waiting in my sewing room to try...it too is a wonderful product. Like I said...just my 2 cents' worth.

P.S. I sent my 616 HSTs today...whoohoo :lol: and sent notice to Debbie. Now I have to get busy on the other two exchanges. No sweat....won't take long at all.

It is a 50-weight cotton thread, which means that it is very thin, and excellent for piecing because it does not create extra bulk in the seam allowance.

I like Superior's MasterPiece thread. It is also a 50-weight cotton thread, but this thread is made with extra-long staple Egyptian-grown cotton, and produces very little lint.
I find that Aurifil tends to produce more lint than I want to deal with.

A lot of TQS members are now using mostly Superior Threads. They have been a site sponsor since the beginning of TQS. In fact,
Dr. Bob, The Thread Guy, was on the very first TQS episode, and continues to offer thread education through his excellent web site and monthly newsletter.

I agree. Superior Threads dominates my thread stash. MasterPiece is what I'm using as well. Their website is worth a look around. There is a lot of solid info there. If you even get a chance to hear Bob speak at a quilt show it is worth it. Their booths are usually filled with friendly staff and Mother Superior is especially kind. High recommendations from me on this company.
