Hello,
Here is an interesting little bit of history about exchanges found in one of my quilt books.
"In the 1860's, quilters began trading scraps of fabric with friends and relatives, using their collections to make "charm quilts"--scrap quilts in which no two pieces were cut from the same fabric. ........Legend held that when a maiden had collected exactly 999 scraps for her charm quilt, the young man of her dreams would appear wearing the fabric for her one thousandth piece."
So ladies, if you are looking for the man of your dreams, this may the the answer. :lol:

Sisterhood members...with more than half our packages remaining to be mailed, there's still time to provide a helpful photo tip on packaging your HST's.

In a post a couple of days ago, I mentioned that we would prefer that you DO NOT put your HSTs into individual baggies inside the larger bag since I have to take them out anyway before sorting day. As I was going through the packages I've already received taking the HST's out of the small bags, I came across this package and I thought I'd share the 'perfect' packing with you. There are 504 HST's and they were beautifully packed into a one-gallon Ziplock (with no smaller baggies) . Absolutely nothing needs to be done with this prior to sorting day .

If you're not sending in 504, you can still do something similar with a one-quart size. If you're sending in more than 503, there's probably still room for more in the gallon bag, but you could always use a second quart bag for the excess. Because they are so neatly packaged, the corners & tips are will also remain nice and flat and not bent & turned like some I've received that had not been carefully packed.

It's also NOT necessary to sort them by color or count since that won't have any signifigance on sort day. It is also NOT necessary to open & press one HST to show its 'true' colors. Those opened HSTs are going right in with the folded ones, and that will possibly cause them to be wrinkled and it will also complicate the distribution process. And please don't tape anything closed except for your mailing envelope. Taking that tape off takes time and if your internal bag is closed carefully and your envelope taped carefully, you shouldn't need tape anywhere else.

All of us on sorting day will be eternally grateful if you can make your package look like this one. Thanks, Susmcc, for providing the perfect example for all the SoTTT's! Sorry I was confusing! I bought the Singer and he carried it to my car! Swept me off my feet, we were engaged 2 weeks later and married in 4 months. And I love him more today that then! My HST's will be mailed tomorrow!

This is an updated repeat of shipping info in case you are ready to get yours off to Debbie this week:

If it helps you to have a visual of what you need to send Debbie, this post's for you!
Depending on how many HSTs you send, your package may be smaller and postage may be less.
(This bubble wrap mailer, purchased at my local PO, is holding 616 HSTs.)

Inside the mailer of your choice you need to send to Debbie:

**A self addressed, STAMPED return mailer, at least as large and the one you ship to Deb in. Put your name and address as the return address so that if there is insufficient postage, it will come back to you. The PO box that Debbie is using will be closed so you don't want it going back there!
I'd like to suggest that rather than dropping your package into a mailbox, you take it to your local post office to post & mail. At that time you can talk with the postal clerk about what postage is needed for your return envelope.
PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR POST OFFICE FOR SUFFICIENT POSTAGE!

(International participants just need to include a mailing label and a copy of their PayPal receipt for postage)

You will need to use stamps on this mailer. The metered postage is dated, so it can't be used for return mailing.
Include your TQS screen name and the total number of HSTs you are exchanging on the OUTSIDE of the return mailer.

**A plastic bag containing all your HSTs, clearly labeled with your TQS screen name and the total number of HSTs you are exchanging.
Please keep your total an increment of 28, but they do not have to be in individual bags.

Debbie really liked the way these arrived! There are 504 HSTs neatly packaged in a one gallon size zip-lock bag.



**optional - HSTs for Australia, clearly labeled in a separate baggie. (DO NOT COUNT THESE HSTs IN YOUR TOTAL!)
**optional - HSTs for Hanne-Grete, clearly labeled in a separate baggie. (DO NOT COUNT THESE HSTs IN YOUR TOTAL!)



On the outside of your mailer to Debbie be sure to put your TQS Screen Name and total number of HSTs you are exchanging.

Thanks for all the reminders and the visuals. They really help. However, am I correct in that the international ( Canada etc.) packages DO NOT have to have a return envelope and we will pay for the postage and the return envelope via Paypal before we send the package. We should include the receipt for the postage payment in the envelope with out HSTs. Is this ccorrect?

I'd like to ask how much is it for postage for 616 HSTs from USA to Canada, including the envelope? And, do I pay Margo or Debbie?

HOW MANY HST'S FIT INTO A FLAT RATE BOX/ENVELOPE????


A flat rate cardboard envelope (12-1/2" x 9-1/2") can hold approximately 308 HSTs. The Small Flat Rate Box (1-1/2" high x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2') will also hold about 308 HSTs. I kept the HST's in the eleven baggies they were already in and that filled up the box pretty well. If they weren't in individual baggies, but maybe only one or two, there should be enough room for 308 (eleven increments of 28 HSTs). Remember to pack them carefully so they don't get scrunched and wrinkled!

The above International smaller envelope and box to and to all other countries, it is $13.95 US. Canada/Mexico is $11.95 US

The Medium Flat Rate Box (5-1/2" high x 11" x 8-1/2") should hold 700-1092 comfortably (remember increments of 28), but that size does cost significantly more Internationally. The cost to Canada/Mexico is $27.95 US and to all other countries, it is $45.50.

Otherwise you are completely correct in what you say for doing your packing.

Before I posted my HST I tried them in different packages. I had a used US flat rate priority envelope (12-1/2" x 9-1/2") ($13.95 US) and I was able to put in the 616 plus 70 more for Queensland and Hanne-Grete with room to spare so assumed that you would use that to send the HST back Internationally. I then read that the next size up would cost $45.50 US.

I don’t want to give you more work but would it not make more sense, if the returning 616 HST don’t fit into the flat rate envelope, to put them in two separate envelopes as that will only cost $27.90 US, a difference of $17.60 which is quite a lot.

Sorry if you had already thought of this and had decided to do that.
