I am not familiar with RETAYNE or SYNTHROPOL, thanks Margo, for the links to learn about these products. I am curious to know if vinegar is part of their formula, but doubt that this information is available to the public. Is there any information of the packaging indicating the contents? Does the type of dye dictate how to "permanently" set the color? Are there any chemists out there that can explain more about the use of vinegar as a setting agent?
My husband is a chemist. He is going to look into this particular issue and see what he can find out for us. YAY..... He says that this particular field of chemistry is a specialty field of it's own. There are many types of dyes - some are organic (plants, vegetable, animal, bugs - Yes - it is true  ) and many synthetic - and one single type of product will not address the bleed-out of every single type of dye. Vinegar is acidic acid. I have personally found it to be helpful in "setting" color in pre-washing fabrics, but it does not always stop the bleeding in all cases and you must rinse thoroughly to get out the vinegar odor. I've never tried RETAYNE or SYNTHROPOL, but will order some and try it.

That's all I can contribute right now. As soon as he gets some answers, I will reply.

Just remembered something: I bought a hand-dyed batik pareo in Grenada & the lady in the shop told me to walk into the ocean while wearing it, as the sea water would "set" the dye. Now, I guess we can't all just walk down to a beach & rinse our fabrics and/or quilts. Maybe some components of sea water (fish pee??? eeekkk!!!) other than salt work some magic. But I think I'll mix up some salt water, put in some test fabric & see what happens.
Wonder what chemistry is at play here?

Using salt to set colors is ringing a bell. Now sure why. One thing I am sure of...I'll never go into the ocean again w/o thinking "fish pee'!

Want something fun to do with TQS sisters & brothers while waiting for our treasured HST's & strips??!!
Anyone interested in a potholder swap? I participated in one last year & it was great fun.
The sky's the limit since you will decide all the issues...color/size/shape/theme/and so on with your swap partner.
I'll be the monitor...it's easy to join.
Just send me an e-mail at

            mailto:tqs.potholderswap@gmail.com

            before May 1, 2011.

After I receive all your e-mails, I will pair you up.
Once you have your swap partner's e-mail, you will communicate with each other to set up the

Of course I picked April 15th to mail my strips at the Post Office. I had to laugh at myself. I just want to thank Barb for her time and effort putting this together. I hope her reward is just getting to see all of the beautiful fabrics. Thanks so very much! May I add, after I posted this I wanted to give a huge thank you to all that are involved working on this.

Do we have a new total of strips in the exchange thus far? I'm having a hard time imagining our wonderful sorters divvying out over 400 yards of fabric in 1 1/2 x 22 inch pieces! What a monumental task! Thanks to you ladies for your hard work!

                        Barbara,

I am sorry, but I will not be able to send any strips. I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer on March 31st. I had exploratory surgery on April 2nd which will result in a 10.5 in. scar! They were able to remove most of the cancer and I will begin chemo next week. I am not bouncing back as quick as I had hoped. At 72 it takes a bit longer than I would like! I had just started cutting strips after sending in my HST when this all started. I have enjoyed reading all the posts and feel bad I have to drop out. We are hopeful for a great recovery. Please keep me in your prayers.

Hugs to you Deanna. I got one of you HSTs in my returns and realized that we are nearly neighbors. Wishing you a successful fight with the big "C".

Miss Deanna, you can count on my prayers. I was going to email you privately but I'll say it here because knowing the TQS members, others are going to have the same thought. But I would love to send you some strips so you don't miss out. I didn't have enough variety so I bought more fabric and can easily and happily cut more strips. If anyone else wants to do this, I could have you mail them to me to pass on to Deanna if that's alright with Barb and everyone.

I'm in for extra strips for Deanna - and Deanna, on those nights when you can't sleep, sewing strips will work! I'll have my strips in the Priority mail on the 24th or 25th so they'll make it there by the 30th. Deanna, you can do this and we're all pulling for you. Love and prayers. Pat

Hope you are back up and sewing very soon - we are all thinking about you.

I will make sure you get some strips from me.
