This is a beautiful layout! Do you have the name of the pattern or did you create the design?

It's called a Ribbon Star and is a very old design. The photo is one I saw on another web site, but a Google search turned up these directions:

    And this book! http://www.martingale-pub.com/store/...roducts_id=656
I went to ideas for quilting site and turned up this block, the Friendship Name Chain, it seems perfect for me and the blank squares down the middle will be the ideal place to put printed copies of all the names - and if I really feel the insanity kicking in I could also make sure that the names are next to the block 8)

I think I'm going to try my first double=sided quilt. Hopefully everyone put their names on the triangle paper which I want to print on fabric and make into HSTs themselves for a pattern on the back. The front I guess is not too original. I love the simple patterns or the cover quilt on Edyta's book. I keep trying to design something myself but can't help feeling there's a couple standard patterns I've wanted ever since I started quilting so think my heart for all my special friendship squares is to do one of those tried and true patterns.

You are a very courageous quilter! I;m no where near trying to even think about a double sided quilt. So far, I've mounted all my HSTs papers from the Batik exchange onto pretty construction paper and will have them laminated. Then, I'm going to print out all the names and places on one sheet - maybe in calligraphy - because the mounting of the real little papers took seven pages! (well spaced, not crowded) As for a pattern - I agree with you - why re-invent the wheel when there are so many good, established patterns out there. Between Edyta and Margo, they are lots of nice choices. I was also trying to come up with something new and nifty, but the variety of colours would suit a simple pattern, In my humble opinion.

Double sided quilts aren't anything to be afraid of, I've also come across it being refered to as 'back art'. And why shouldn't you have as much fun on the back as the front. I would suggest though, that if one side is inrticate or small patches, make the other side big patches, maybe make one large block, or set of 4 for the reverse.
On my profile there is a double sided cover - blue satin one side 9-patch on the other, which I made as a quilt as you go, and also a couple of partial quilt tops, that are going to (eventually) be put back to back, the tops are now finished by the way, just waiting assambly but since it will be my first full size quilt not done 'quilt as you go' I am 'wossing out' on putting it together.

Rosemary--Friendship name chain is just the perfect block for a signature quilt I want to prepare of the 50th Anniversary in 2012 of Grade 12 Graduation. It will be a wonderful project to do as another Stash Buster.

Actually Rosemary, that point concerned me too - that both sides would be made up of so much small piecing. Thought about strength and difficulty of quilting through so many seams.

Instead of making the printed names into hsts - why don't you print an 8" square of fake hsts with lines to mark the borders and the names already printed in the spaces. That way you have fewer seams. If you have a good program and printer you could probably even make each triangle a different color to make it look like real fabric. Or, if you do not want to print the lines, you could sew a decorative line where the triangles should be.

I've had some inspiration... and am now thinking of using the triangles to make a hot air balloon or kite or something similar! To signify the travelling triangles.. am not playing with patterns where I repeat the hot air balloon or trying different transport equipment in each of the blocks.. still dreaming, having soooo much fun.

I love this idea. I hadn't decided what to do with mine when I get them. Doreen

I wasn't part of the exchange but with your inspiration I pieced the following for my Graduation Reunion in 2012. I am still playing with the information that I will transfer unto it. Because I did the project start to finish myself I cut the larger blank areas to avoid so many extra seam lines.

Nice Agnes! Great design for a signature quilt!

I think Ribbon Star is the perfect size for the number of Batiks we have. Still don't know what I'm going to make with the SOTTs triangles. Keep the suggestions coming, ladies.

I sent in 280 HSTs and I received 281 HSTs back (!) from 37 states and 6 countries! I had several unidentified, and a fair number of dups and trips, but I am super happy. There are many colors and combos that are quite different from my normal "style", and I think that will help make this a most fabulous and special quilt! I have been playing with a block called the Contrary Wife (gotta love the name), and thought I might make it up in different color groups, and go from there...this first version was inspired by a quilt I saw in a book many years back - The Cheerful Child (I think) by Mary Hickey.

What a great lay-out to make a large quilt with your HSTs! Love it!
