I did ice dyeing with a group of friends last year. We layered ice over crumpled fabric (soaked in soda ash solution first) and then just sprinkled small amounts of the powdered dye over the ice. Let sit overnight. WARNING - be sure to wear a mask over nose and mouth when using the powdered dye!

Wendy,
Thanks for getting me over here.
Yes, I've been dyeing fabric for a few years now. I have taken several online classes and of course, I read everything that comes across my radar.
Yesterday I used ice from the self-service trailer just down the road. I really wanted to get it from Sonic, but didn't want to make the trip to town. I'm quite satisfied with my results. And most importantly, the person who's sheet set I dyed is pleased. I love deep intense colors and these came out very well. I don't have pictures of the sheets, but I also did a few fat quarters. And I have some of those.
And when they're all together, oh my I do like dyeing fabric!
Today another set of sheets and two shirts are batching. I didn't use ice this time. Perhaps I'll be able to get a picture of the beds with just sheets and pillowcases for tomorrow

Wendy,
Yes I use procion mx fiber reactive dyes. I do believe, but I could be wrong, that they are the best to use in low water, or cool water applications. And snow or ice definitely qualify.
I purchased Dharma Trading Co.'s colors that mimicked the Spring 2014 Pantone Palette. I used Baby Blue Eyes, Azure, Hyacinth, bougainvillea, watermelon, orange crush, daffodil, sea glass, and probably an amount of Golden Yellow as that's one of my favorites.
I had also mixed my 'own' black by using equal weights of each of those mentioned(not the golden yellow). I was very interested to see just what 'shade' of black I would get. It was ok, but I use it mostly with deconstructed screen printing. Now there's another rabbit hole to drop in on!!
One thing just leads to another in my life. As far as volume of powder to sprinkle? Well, that's a variable. A fun way to see just how much does what is to keep a record. I like taking pictures and writing on my blog about what I'm up to. I have started several 'dyeing journals' and I just can't find the info I want, when I want it. I should probably use a three ring binder so I could group pages by topic. I could use duplicates when it needs to be in more than one place.
Anyhow, I should probably get my blog post done for the day.
Until then, a little more eye candy
Enjoy your day,
Luann

AnnieLu, I like the detail record of the dye variation you showed. I just started a dye journal but have not gone into doing color value yet. I just ice dyed nine yards of fabric for a friend for her king size quilt back. That is the largest amount I have ice dyed at one time before. How can I find your blog?

Thanks Artmomma and Sewengel,
My blog's address is
www.letscreatetoday.blogspot.com
That will take you to the current day's post. I haven't figured out how to give an address for a specific post. Something I'm sure I will learn soon. I also need to figure out how to have the labels that I've put on each post show up for folks to find specific info.
I haven't been blogging that long so even if you decided to scan thru all of my posts it wouldn't take that long.
My color chips are modeled after paint chips in stores. You may have noticed the letters and numbers on them. That actually tells me exactly how I got that color so I can repeat it again if I want. Candy Glendenning's online classes were the most helpful in that area. As soon as you start her second dyeing class you are told to weigh your dye powders and the fabric. Things really started to make sense to me after that. I love the serendipitous way that ice dyeing works, but I have 2 pieces that I wish I had written things down for. I've not been able to reproduce them again. And I really think it was the 'drops' of black that I shaded the color with!
I hope you enjoy visiting my blog. Leave a comment or question on as many posts that you want to and I will try to answer each individually.
And, if you decide to follow my blog that would be great too. You'll notice that it's only been since May 1st that I've posted daily. It was one of my May goals. One of those, prove it to myself, things! June will probably slow down on posts, or at least shorten up. But then, I do like to chatter.
Have a pleasant evening,
Luann

I'm still drooling. I like your labelling system and keeping a tag on each sample. So far I've glued a snippet to my notebook next to the proportions of colour and I dab wet dye on the paper as well. I get mixed up when I start diluting as I've usually made less than the instructions I'm following. It's fun though.
It makes sense to make your own black then it'll work with your dyes. I struggled knowing which to get but would only get mud at the moment if I try my own.
Artmomma have you a picture of your sheet for us, please
Thanks Luann subscribed to your blog.

For my dye the color wheel experiment I carefully measured the ingredients and recorded that information. I am interested in locating the class you mentioned about weighing materials. I have only worked in small amounts up to a yard before my friend just had to have a special back for a quilt. I took three yard sections and basted the raw edges together. I used turquoise and golden yellow sprinkled over the ice with 1/8 t & 1/4 t. My friend wants to have the quilt finished by this weekend - a special gift for her brother. I felt like an area of one the pieces needed a little more blue so I squirted some liquid dye on it first thing yesterday. We put the three fabric sections in a bucket for her to take home and wait a few hours before washing. At the time I did not know this conversation was active. I am going to visit her Tuesday and will take pictures then. And joyfully post them - love the sharing!
