playing with colorways
This will be my first TQS block of the month and I can't wait to get started! I just rewatched Alex's show about neutrals and WOW, super inspired. I am thinking about doing this project in neutrals, but as high contrast as you can get and still be considered neutrals. Alex showed a "green" fabric that was a neutral fabric that wasn't exacly green, but "hinted" at green. I am going to try and find a hint at green, a hint at rose, and a hint at blue for the appliques. My biggest challange will be finding the fabrics. In the show, Alex said there are generally only a few good neutrals each year. Now I get to wait for the fabric requirments so I can start the best part of quilting.... Shopping
The great neutral hunt of 2013 will soon be underway!

Ooh, have fun!
I've been collecting neutral linens for the last three years and hope to get a quilt for my mom done by early next summer... But before I can finish, I would need to get started! And to get started i need to finish & start and finish a few other projects first.
My mom is absolutely and totally nuts about linen, so all cream, greyish, brownish and beige linen fabrics I've come accross have been put aside.

I love neutral quilts and have been saving many different values of neutrals for other quilts that I am making. I am going to go with the Turquoise and oranges since they are my favorite colors and also the reds I have them in my stash waiting for this type of quilt. So I am not being very imaginative but I love the fabrics that I will be using! just hoping (i'm sure I do) that I have enough of the fabric requirements if not it will get pretty scrappy
Is anyone seeing some beading done to this quilt? I think some beading with this quilt will really make it shine.Deb from Toronto

ooooh, beading, that's a good idea. I thought I would do mine in gradations of navy to light blue and dark gold to pale yellow. Using the gradations mostly in the applique and sticking to solids in the pieced areas. I would love, love, love to do this quilt in Cherrywood fabrics!Deb from Toronto

So interesting to read all the ideas people have about colourways! I REALLY like the design of this quilt, but not the colourway, so am planning to make it in greens instead of turquoise, with pinks and reds replacing the orange shades. I love to work in a "controlled scrappy" way, and I think those pieced sashings will be a fabulous way to use up LOTS of oddments from my stash. Appliqué will be a new adventure for me, and I'm debating whether to do it, or cheat and use a large floral fabric - I have plenty of those to choose from!

Stephen, I hope you do try applique... at least to see if you like it. I resisted applique for years, until one day I started some hand applique and just loved it. This one is machine applique, probably, since it's from Pat Holly and Sue Nickel. I'm not so good at machine applique but doing this quilt will do doubt give me lots of practice at it!

It's not that easy to keep up with those BOM's. You'll be in the same boat as the rest of us. the two I did, i got behind a lot. I did finish them, though! The two I made were from Sue Garman, the Queen of fantastically small piecing! I hope that this one will be a little easier. Did I just say that?
Anyway, I still have to come up with a color scheme.

Stephen.. there really is not alot of applique here and the pieces are simple. I would suggest to step out of the box and try some applique but if you want to go a step further you can fussy cut some flowers of your own rather than the applique that is presented...just a thought...

I love machine appliqué, just love it, at first I was a bit awkward but once you get the hang of it wow I don't stop, I am always putting appliqué on everything.
Stephen I don’t know how long you have been a member but if you can watch some of the past shows with machine appliqué on them especially the one Ricky Tims does it/they are ever so helpful, and at least you will get the hang of it before you start. But yes do give it a try as I know I was not in the least interested in this until I did some.

I wasn't going to do the colorway presented. However my daughter saw the quilt and loved the colors saying her favorite colors are orange and turquiose and would like me to make it for her. So, I bought the kit.

I printed the instructions for machine applique from either "Stars for a New Day" or "Hugs and Kisses". I believe they were done by Sue Garmen. They are excellent and include stems. I refresh my memory with instructions each time I attempt machine applique.
