Janet, they are the old British coins we used before decimalisation in 1972(/3?) The penny is approximately 1 3/32" diameter (a shade smaller than 1 1/4") and the ha'penny is 1" in diameter. You can still pick them up on antique stalls, although they cost a bit more than that now and as Lilian shows, they were a common and frequently used template.

What an awesome video! This may be a stupid question, but I honestly don't know - how would you transfer the design to your quilt? Would you draw it on the quilt top to start, or would you draw a template and then transfer it somehow?
I wish there was someone like this locally that could teach me these tricks. I took 1 piecing class to learn the basics about 10 years ago, and have just been playing since. Granted I do read a lot of books and learn from them, and shows like TQS always teach me something new. It seems that most of what I do isn't the "proper way", but I make it work. The ladies at my local quilt shop almost died when I walked in with a pattern I made on my own for my second quilt...Don't think I'll be winning any quilt shows, but I'm having fun

Jdeluka, that question is only stupid if you don't ask it.
Some dozen years ago I went on a 1 day course with Lilian Hedley and she showed us how to draw feathers etc, and then we went on to design and start a cushion cover (pillow). (Pretty sure it is finished but not made up yet  ) To transfer the design we put the drawing under the fabric (it was plain white) and just drew it on with an hb pencil. Nothing fancy at all, but it worked. I personally prefer to use a mechanical pencil (so I don't have to keep sharpening it ) So basically the light box technique before you sandwich your quilt up.Lyndhurst, Ohio USA - East Side Suburb of Cleveland, Ohio
