    Quilting heros

This is my first quilting hero in action. I suspect that most of you on the other side of the pond haven't heard of her, but she represents an unbroken line of 'students to teacher' from at least the 1900's and probably earlier.

Love this! Thank you. Drawing feathers has always intimidated me, but this is so helpful. What size is that coin? Janet K

Janet, they are the old British coins we used before decimalisation in 1972(/3?) The penny is approximately 1 3/32" diameter (a shade smaller than 1 1/4") and the ha'penny is 1" in diameter. You can still pick them up on antique stalls, although they cost a bit more than that now and as Lilian shows, they were a common and frequently used template.

What an awesome video! This may be a stupid question, but I honestly don't know - how would you transfer the design to your quilt? Would you draw it on the quilt top to start, or would you draw a template and then transfer it somehow?

I wish there was someone like this locally that could teach me these tricks. I took 1 piecing class to learn the basics about 10 years ago, and have just been playing since. Granted I do read a lot of books and learn from them, and shows like TQS always teach me something new. It seems that most of what I do isn't the "proper way", but I make it work. The ladies at my local quilt shop almost died when I walked in with a pattern I made on my own for my second quilt...Don't think I'll be winning any quilt shows, but I'm having fun

Jdeluka, that question is only stupid if you don't ask it.

Some dozen years ago I went on a 1 day course with Lilian Hedley and she showed us how to draw feathers etc, and then we went on to design and start a cushion cover (pillow). (Pretty sure it is finished but not made up yet  ) To transfer the design we put the drawing under the fabric (it was plain white) and just drew it on with an hb pencil. Nothing fancy at all, but it worked. I personally prefer to use a mechanical pencil (so I don't have to keep sharpening it ) So basically the light box technique before you sandwich your quilt up.

Thank you, Rosemary, for your introduction of Lillian Hedley to our group--totally enjoyed how she handles designing feathers, I'll definitely dig around and find out more about her. Indeed a treasure!

What a great video Rosemary, thank you very much. It really takes the sting out of drawing feathers doesn't it?

Thanks for the lovely link! I'll be using this method next time I need a certain size feather.
Jdluka, there are many ways to transfer a design and among them is using a light box or light table, the other one, which I have used, is to perforate the paper and use a pounce.

Join your local quilt guild! I have learned so much from many long time quilters in our group. If a guild is not close by, you can also start or find a quilting friendship group by checking with your local quilt store. Of course, the very knowledgeable and supportive quilters here on TQS are always ready to answer (24/7, with the time difference between countries, lol).
