Got nowhere this year at FoQ Phillipa Naylor was in the miniatures group as well (again) and ended up with best in show. Feeling right down in the dumps, holiday was not warm and we only got out in the canoes once (DH didn't like the look of the access points to the river Wye at the campsite).
For what it is worth here is Hawaiian Haycorns
Finished size approx 11 3/4" square
Mug rugger and lounge lizard

Thanks to Wendy posting, I've only just found out about my latest Highly Commended. That has made my day, and I look forward to going and gloating over it on Saturday.
Marilyn, both the fabrics are tapa cloth - bark cloth. The white is from Hawaii and I think the brown is from Africa. The real advantage of using it is that it doesn't fray and didn't need turning under :P My own design, been contemplating it for well over a year, but only got started on it about 6 weeks ago
On Fb I did see that someone else had submitted a Hawaiian style mini quilt, but hers was a copy of the Aloha quilt by Jennifer Chavrini (sp?)
By the way, Maxiaiture is being entered into The Great Northern Quilt Show -for the free entry ticket of course I admit to doing a bit of 'make up' work on the stitches, as Lorchan told me that some people do for a more polished/finished look, and it does add to its/her looks.
Doing a happy dance :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Rosemary, I hereby award you and your quilt the "Best In The Whole Show" award. Lounge Lizards have special quilt award abilities. B)
Your quilt is amazing and I'm glad you were duly honored.
Have you thought of sending your miniatures over here and entering them in some of the shows here? That way more people would be able to enjoy them. I realize the cost maybe prohibitive.
Good on ya! genevaGeneva

No wonder I didn't recognize it...don't think I've ever seen or handled the real thing...only fabric made to look like tapa cloth.
I read that it is a non-woven and will disintegrate when wet. Does that apply to yours? Or is there some treatment that
makes it sort of "washable? Of course it's not necessary for an art piece. In any case it's wonderful and as always
your work is terrific.

Geneva, does that award come with ribbons? :P as to sending them over to shows on your side of the pond I wouldn't know where to start.
Marilyn, because of creases in the brown, I steam pressed it and the cream one with no problems. Then after tacking the two together I blocked the two together (should probably have blocked the cream on it's own), but again no collapse of fabric, however it probably is weaker when wet and would be prone to stretching out of shape. I only got my hands on the cream one because a good friend of mine bought some from Hawaii to make a replica embroidered waistcoat (vest) on one that had been embroidered by Elizabeth Cook, wife of Captain James Cook. http://alisonlarkinembroidery.com/?q=node/46
So yes it is washable, just don't be rough with it - would not recommend putting it in a machine :P

Rosemary, your oak leaves & acorns is stunning! Love the use of the bark cloth. The texture really adds to the texture we all love with the quilting as well. Nicely done!! Fine intricate work!
