    marinar's compass

    Hello to all,

This is the first time in the forum & glad to be here ^ need some help. I want to try & make the marinar's compass & heard it was extremely hard is it??? Does anyone have a free pattern that I can trade you for some fabric?

I'm a Grama of 7, disabled, married & love to sew/quilt. If my back allows it then I can sit longer at my machine.

    Thanks & happy quilting............Chris

Hi GramaChris! Welcome to the forum. I just googled 'Mariners Compass free quilt blocks' and there are lots of patterns out there. Here's a free one from Craftsy

        http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/quilt...ss-block/33788

It's one I have always wanted to do but felt daunted by it. Maybe someday. Good luck with it.

          Welcome to the forum GramaChris.

My two pennyworth - it might be easier to make a Mariner's Compass using paper piecing (if you get on with the technique). By the way, if you go to the Classrooms Margo Clabo has some excellent tutorials on how to do paper piecing from this year's BoM which is very spiky learn/classrooms/. Also starch is your friend! - another Margo tip.

Morning GramaChris...Welcome to the Forum ! You've already got my two suggestions...Paper piecing
and searching for a free pattern. It is a great design and has so many variations that the research can be
a project of it's own!   Have fun !

Hi Chris, the first thing I made was Mariners compass .....paper pieced I was terrified but it was easy.
I don't know if I still have the pattern but I will have a look for it and see if I can get it to you somehow.

THANK YOU to everyone......................................I have been on other forum's but this by far is the fastest return, amazing! I have viewed the patterns that were suggested to me & I remember seeing a pattern different even though they are probably lots of them out there. The pattern that I'm looking for looks
                      1. like a long curved piece which is only a 1/4 of the pattern(like Double Wedding Ring)
                      2. then another section
                      3. last piece (like the edge of Drunkards Path)
My search will go on & on & I really do appreciate the help. If there is anything that I can help others with please don't hesitate to ask. Oh & by the way Loise98 I will shows pics when I get it done :-) Grama Chris

                        Hi Chris,
I found out where I got the Mariners compass paper pieced pattern
                        http://www.bearpawproductions.com
click on quilting basics at the top of the page then scroll down to mariners compass and you can download the pattern pieces and the info.
I found it helpful to stick a tiny piece of the fabrics I was using onto the relevant areas and then I didn't get in a muddle......hope this makes sense.
Good luck....I will try to post a photo of mine on the forum

                          Hi!
If you are into drafting your own pattern, I recommend this book "Mariner's Compass Quilts - Setting a new course" by Judy Mathieson.
                          It shows you how to draft - although there are patterns included, how to piece;
there are a lot of different variations - 8/16/32/64 points, 5 points, 6 points stars...
                          different settings, etc.

                          Good luck!

                          Andrée

Could you be looking for a New York Beauty rather than a Mariner's Compass? The New York Beauty is the block with a 1/4 circle arc with spikes. You might want to search for images on Google to see if this is what you want.
