If it is just going to be a wall hanging then I heard of a good idea the other day. The presenter at our quild meeting has a irregularly shaped quilt. She cut out foam board to match the shape and then attached it to the back by hand sewing on another backing to cover it. Of course this is a small wall sized. If it is a larger quilt you could maybe do the same to the top edge only.
