Show 809: Paper piecing and pizza

I had the immense pleasure of watching the show this morning (usually I'm at work on Mondays and have to fit in the show watching sometime later, but took the day off as part of my Easter break). Alex, it was wonderful! You have convinced this old art quilter who has never been a fan of paper piecing to try again and make one of the New York Beauties. I loved it. I love the colors in all the quilts too, but especially the New York beauty! And by the way, next time you do pizza and quilting, invite me and I'll fly right out (from the Wash DC area)!

Thank you all for such a wonderful show!

    Cheers

I've been catching up watching shows this weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed this show. I've now added a new quilt idea to my list of projects. Alex, you really took the fear out of the New York Beauty blocks. It is one of my favorites, but the block always looked too intimidating. I love paper piecing and have Alex's first book which has some beautiful quilts in it. I think the applique idea is just brilliant!! Sandi in FL

I clicked on the project link to get the templates for the New York Beauty blocks, but I don't see the piece that goes around the edge of the arc. I have the pie piece, the solid arc and the arc with spires. Help! What am I missing??

Hi kchiccarine and welcome to the forum!

That show is several years old, but you can easily draft your own large background piece from any size square you want to use!
(The point of the show was paper foundation piecing, but I'm not sure why the PDF didn't include the last piece.)

Just draw a square the FINISHED SIZE you want your block to be. Use the PDF print-out to trace the SEWING LINE of the pieced arc into one corner of your square so that the outside straight edges line up with the square you drew. That will be your sewing line. Add 1/4" to that for your cutting line, and 1/4" to the other 3 sides and you will have a perfectly sized template for your project!

If you can't figure out how to draw it, let me know and I'll try to get something done for you.
