I took a class with her last year at Quilt Festival and she is indeed inspiring. Talented, delightful lady, who believes anyone can do the nearly impossible. Her methodology is unimpeachable - and she has really done her homework! I was lucky enough to be her Teacher's Pet in that class!
Since she lives in Austrailia, thank goodness for DVDs now so we can all view her work and lessons. She does come to USA sometimes, but obviously not every month!

OK, I try just about every tip I see/hear on TQS so I had to try the "pierce the thread with the needle to prevent the thread from slipping out" trick. Did anybody else try it? It took about a zillion trys and just as many skin pricks but I actually did it. I guess one gets more proficient with practice, but I could have threaded the needle about 100 times in the time it took me to get it to work.
It was a great show and she is a very clever and talented lady. I also enjoyed looking at her website and seeing some other great ideas she has developed. But I am not a hand work person anymore.
I also tried Ricky's mitered corner binding technique. Little but more fiddly on my 42x42 quilt and WITHOUT the tool but I got there in the end. I also need the #34 Bernina presser foot to see what I am doing. I combined his technique with some tips from Sharon Schamber--love glue basting. She estimated the seam allowance by folding the folded binding in thirds. For example, a 2 1/2" strip folded in half is 1 1/4". Folding that into 3 is a little over a 3/8" seam. Worked great.

Libbi,
I have been using Luxin's trick about locking the thread on the needle for about a year since taking the class with her at 2007 Quilt Festival. It works great! And is especially useful when using silk for hand applique because the thread so easily comes unthreaded.
She is awesome and absolutely as soft-spoken as she appears! The only time I saw her raise her voice was when she talked about people trying to copy her thimble and they finally had to resort to getting the patent! Can't blame her.
She is a patient teacher and if she ever comes to your area, don't miss the chance to take her class! Check her website to see her times of coming to your area!
I am always kind of 'taken back' when people talk about how Simply Quilts changed their lives. I have never had cable so have never watched it - although have noticed one can see some of it on the internet now - and to hear Luxin say how much it changed her life and her business was interesting!
There is a whole dimension of quilting that I'm completely out of the loop about!

I want to watch her segment again and try some of her methods. I actually have used her "Chinese weave"? technique--I'd never seen her do it. I was just doing it to "correct" bumpy edges that I'd considered a mistake! From now on, I'll call all my "correction"
methods a "technique"!!!!! I would love to take a class from her before I buy all the stuff. I want to learn her technique to keep the tail from slipping out of the needle. I use those 60 wt. bobbins of polyester thread for hand applique that Superior sells. I just love them, but they are slippery. I put the whole color spectrum that they sell into a round, rubber bobbin holder and it's really portable. I'm concerned about silk thread, though. I think someone mentioned a while back on the Forum that the appliques had come loose from some quilts because of the silk thread used with cotton fabric. Correct me if I'm wrong.

According to Luixin, that is not true! And I have also heard others argue the point.
I do know that there are those, among them the Piece O'Cake gals who are adamant about using only cotton thread.
I think maybe it just comes down to preference.
Course I don't know if Luixin's quilts are ever washed or if they are only for display. Maybe that is the difference.
Any body out there know any differently?

I also use Sharons three crease binding method and will never do it another way. Cheryl

What a sweet, lovely person. And talented! This show and show 309 were chock full of fabulous tips.I haven't tried the silk thread trick yet but I will.Probably it takes practice like everything else in life.I did try the circle technique Alex showed in show 309 and it worked perfectly.I was happy to hear Ricky play some beautiful music for us again.Always something to learn on this great site.
