    house keeping

when this site was set up we took our best stab at setting up this forum - it is time for a revamp - if YOU got to choose topics (and let's say you have 6 or so to choose from) what would they be and in what order? Inquiring minds want to know -

    #2
Oh goodness, Alex, you're asking for the moon! Only 6? I realized it would be nice to have things a bit more organized -- I think similar threads exist in several sections. But, still, I have learned soooo much by checking out what's flagged as "new" in the Forum -- often in sections I wouldn't think to look at. But let's see. Certainly a section on the BOMs, a section on meeting up with others traveling to various shows/seminars, I'm glad there's a Dear Jane section (someday, I will start my DJ -- I already have fabric!), new tools and techniques, basic techniques (I've really learned a lot there), advice about entering shows, and -- uh oh, that's my 6! I'll bet you're going to get a whole bunch of different answers! (and, no, sigh, I'm not at Paducah, either ...) Robin

Forum / technical stuff would be the LAST topic... This is after all a quilting forum.

Alex, Rickey TQS Shows Updates, Guests and Show Staff ( Justin et all) should be just above that......Athough to be honest I am torn about this but this topic should be all inclusive about the show. So maybe it should be number one. YOU decide.

Too many topics you might get one or two POSTS then nothing for months.

      1 or 2
HAND WORK----Hand piecing, Hand-applique, Hand Quiltiing, emboidery, etc... should all be together.

      1 or 2
MACHINE WORK..... Machine techniques, fusing, paper piecing,

      Third :
Quilting the Quilt...Domestic and LA.. Hand could fit here too

      Fourth:
      NOTIONS, EQUIPMENT, FABRICS,THREADS, EMBELLISHMENTS, ETC.

      5th
      TRADITIONAL QUILTS and QUILT HISTORY:

      6th
      ART and Contemporary QUILTING:

      7th
      tIPS, TOOLS, TOYS & MISCELLANY

      8th
Quilt Shows, Quilt Guilds, Quilt Shops, QUILT RETREATS

I am sure you can come up with better, MORE UNIVERSAL NAMES then I came up with. EVEN these might be too many topics. I like simple navigation of the boards.... Too many topics made this site hard to navigate... it was the ladies that made me come back.... I usually post in THIS AND THAT.

I would like something similar to POST SINCE THE LAST TIME YOU WERE HERE.... but should not roll off as frequently. .... Stay up for 24 hours...... I frequently get time to just read one or two post then have to sign off... When I come back everything else gone and it is hard to figure out what the hot topic is for the day.

I am usually a daily or at least every other day surfer... and I do post frequently because this is my favorite board and favorite people.....

SORRY for the crazy caps... caps locks sticks sometimes since my D-GdSon spilled pop on the keyboard.

I'd like to see something similar to the current This and That. People like to go off track, and a topic such as this gives an outlet for whatever is of interest but not covered in the more specific topics

Sorry Alex, no way will I give you a list of 6. My opinion: Look at all the low traffic subjects. Quite a number of them can be easily amalgamated into one, for example 'New Books' and 'New Patterns'.

I understand the need to reorganize the Forum...it is becoming rather unwieldy...and agree with Keith's and Nancy's lists of topics. The one thing I would add to the wish list for the Forum would be the ability to "bookmark" favorite entries, like we can with the Daily and Member Blogs, quilt gallery entries, etc. I'm forever seeing something interesting/helpful on the Forum, then can't figure out where it is when I go back...have even started copying/pasting entries into a Word document to keep track of "gems"! Thanks for the chance to have some input! Nancy

I agree with everyone's suggestions - especially please do not remove what is already there. I'm going to start on the 2009 bom soon and will want to go through all the posts there because I know changes were made, or suggestions were made on technique, as I read through them last year. The forum is such a wonderful wealth of information. No matter what, I love this site.

I ALWAYS want to see the list only of entries posted since my last viewing.

I would like the forum to offer me an option to default to that view instead of having to click on it every time I go in.

I agree with Lorchen..... It's easy to see what isn't of interest.
I have always thought there were way too many subjects. You can't please everyone so do what is best for the website. People will get over it. I doubt they will want a price increase just to save everything ever posted from day one. My motto is....... If you haven't read it in a year's time, you never will. Save to your computer or print the stuff you want to revisit.

One idea is keep the, view posts since last visit, option. Sometimes time is too short to slog through everything.

I can see the need, though this has been a wonderful forum overall.

                          I really like:
                          Help I'm Stuck
                          BOM
Wow I didn't know it would do that (unusual tools)
                          This and That

I'd also like to see you keep something like:
                          Comments on current shows
                          Comments problems on regular tools
                          Machine comments/problems
                          Handwork/hand quilting
                          Machine quilting
                          Embellishments

I realize this is 10 not 6, but I predict that if you do this, "This and That" will get very large itself, so maybe you'd be better off with say 10 or 12 rather than just six. Just my two cents worth. Cheers

Most forums I visit have an Archive section all of it's own. They are usually locked so can't be added to and admin and mods shove stuff in there that hasn't been posted on after a certain amount of time (6 months, 1 year). Yes everything does end up under one header but nothing is lost.

I also mentioned a few months ago that I hate the fact that there is only Posts Since Last Visit. There should at least be a Posts in the Last 24 hours. I'm often interrupted and don't finish reading the newest posts and there is no way I'm trawling through the whole forum looking for them.

I've noticed too that when you click a header, everything collapses except that header. It's usually the other way around so that you keep open only the areas you want to see. It's also interesting that the only thing actually left is 'Forum'. There should really be a minimum of three. Technical (including forum rules and etiquette), Sewing and Quilting (the stitchy part) and Over the Quilt Room Table (Chat, fun and real life stuff). After this is could be Archive, only accessible for members to view, not add to.

                              Technical:
Rules and Etiquette (These have to be here)
Guides for New Members (Pointers to areas of interest)
                              Hitches and Glitches (Help!)
                              Sewing and Quilting:
                              Beginners
Hand Sewing (If I need advice on a type of needle, I can ask here, I don’t need a needle section)
Machine Sewing (Machines are all machines and problems are often similar)
BIG Projects (The BOMs and Dear Jane type groups)
                              Over the Quilt Room Table
                              Chit Chat (Life)
                              Shows (Who’s going where)
Places to Go and Holidays (I think you can guess that one)
                              Archive
