Journal Quilts - October, November, December
October, November, December - The first TQS Journal Quilt Quarter.
AND it's a FAT quarter if you added September on too!!
So how's everyone coming along?
There are some fabulous little snapshots being put into the Show and Tell. Lot's of styles, techniques and themes plenty to be inspired by.
I hope there are quite a few of you out there who will have a go. Don't forget it's one a month over a three month period. Then you can carry on into the next period or change theme or give it a rest.
Journal Quilting
1 Pick a theme of your choice.
2 Make a quilt 8.5 x 11 inches - embellish and create as you like, even make it bigger if you wish, this is just a guide.
3 We will have quarterly sets, (Jan-Mar, Apr-June, July-Sept, Oct-Dec) so each set is made of 3 quilts, one for each month. This is not set in stone, it’s just a way of making a nice set before moving on to your next theme. If you wish to carry your theme over to the next quarter, feel free!! It’s your Journal.
4 Make brief notes on your process and thoughts as you work.
5 Share with other “journalists” on the show & tell site when finished. see-quilts/show-and-tell-quilts/
6 Use this “journal quilts” thread for discussion, brainstorming and comments.Tags: None

I just posted two quilts. The first one was the response for my September Fast Friday Fabric Challenge which was "space" Mine is called Black Hole and uses bleach discharged fabric, angelina and fused crystals.
The second one is really a little larger than a journal quilt but was a study in techniques for me so I thought it fit the general idea. It is bleach discharged fabric representing mountains and a lake. Then I did a lot of thread painting to represent the snow on the mountains, the ripples in the lake and the reeds and grass in the foreground. Then I applied some angelina to give the lake a glisten effect and appliqued some trees and bushes on it too. If I were to do it over I would make sure the mountains and trees were reflected in the lake better but I like it the way it is. It needs to have the binding finished but I do love this little piece. Hope some more people post their journal pieces, Ann

I think I said at the beginning of the idea of doing journal quilts here that it would motivate me to actually do the Fast Friday Fabric Challenges that I have belonged to for a year and only done two to date. A new challenge is posted the last Friday of the month and you "supposedly" have one week to finish and post it. Well, I have always been late or not posted at all because my brain couldn't wrap around the challenge. Well, a few days ago, I posted my "Black Hole" which was the September challenge. I had planned to do all my challenges the same size and on black fabric. Oh well things change !!!!!
Friday, the October challenge was posted and the theme this month is "animals" realistic, whimsical, abstract, whatever. I actually had two finished quilts that would have met the theme but didn't want to do that. Had to do a new idea. But the new idea "had" to be about 24" x 20" so bigger than a journal quilt so my good idea of combining the projects went sort of out the window. I will still probably post it here when I get it photographed but it is designed and assembled. I used Laura Wasiloski's fast fusing process and her wrapped binding with the
"random acts of fusing" on the back. So now all I have to do is some thread play and quilting and my "Fish gotta Swim and Birds have to Fly" will be ready to post. Wonder if any of you will guess what it looks like!!!! LOL, Hugs, Ann

The size is just a guide line Ann, mainly to give people hope of finishing!!! If you want to post one a little bigger, feel free. It's still something you've done relatively quickly and in the month. Your linked theme could be your Fast Friday!
It's building into quite a collection now!

I just posted my "Fish gotta Swim, Birds have to Fly" Journal quilt for this month. It is larger than a normal journal quilt but it "told me" it had to be larger. I used Laura Wasilowski's fusing techniques. The quilting still needs to be done but I need to practice my freemotion quilting some before I tackle this.
comments are welcomed and appreciated. Ann

Well, I'm dealing with a bit of a temporary handicap: I managed to catch a proper flu virus, and then get bronchitis on top as a secondary infection. I have been feeling too ill to even stroke fabric, let alone do anything with it. I'm over the worst and will try and catch up when I'm back to normal again.
In the meantime I have had a super time just looking at all the Journal Quilts. It's great to see such a lot of variety, and they are all brilliant!

Ann, I'm not a journal quilter, but I looked at your Fish/Birds posting from several days ago, and I can offer some help on the words to the song. Both of the choruses I belong to have this in our repertoire. It's "Can't Help Lovin' That Man" by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein.
Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly.
I got to love one man till I die,
Can't help lovin' that man of mine.
Tell me he's lazy, tell me he's slow.
Tell my I'm crazy, maybe I know.
Can't help lovin' that man of mine,
And I can't tell you why.
When he goes away, that's a rainy day.
And when he comes back the day is fine, the sun will shine.
He can come home as late as can be.
Home without him ain't no home to me.
Can't help lovin' that man of mine.
Now you can sing it to that man of yours! From the edge of Sherwood Forest, home of Robin Hood
