    Black friday, Cybermonday

I was woundering where does Black friday and Cybermonday come from. What does it mean?

I think Black Friday because the retailers lost money. I don't believe that is true any longer. Cyber Monday because the online retailers wanted to jump in and make money.

Hey Duffy! Long time, no see! The terms come from the fact that retailers offer huge sales for Christmas gifts (?) on the day after Thanksgiving hoping to begin making a profit for the fiscal year. I don't know about Belgium but in the states, when a company doesn't make money it is said that their ledgers are "in the red", and when they turn a profit it is called "in the black".
And, like Marti said, the on-line vendors wanted a piece of the action so they claim Monday as their biggest sale day of the year.

Hope all is well in your part of the world!

Hi Margo nice to hear from you too. Thanks to both of you. Now I understand.
Here in Belgium we do have big sales, but that is on 2 January and some kind of summer sales. But we also notice that they find any excuses good to gif a discount here and there, before the end of the year. Not allowed by the law, but who cares as long as we have some benefit from it. It is always nice to get some bargain here and there. Just bought some fabric from Ricky hoop it will arrive soon.
Lots of love from Belgium and thanks again.

Margo's right about the name "Black Friday". Although there are sales and savings, it's not really the best time to get the savings for shoppers on most big ticket items like big screen tvs. Retailers have shoppers fooled into camping out overnight, waiting in long lines, and pushing through crowds for a limited number of lost leaders--staple or highly desired items priced at low or no profit margins to lure customers into their stores to buy items with higher markups. I wouldn't be caught dead in a store or mall on Black Friday.

By the way, did you notice how slow the Internet was yesterday? Well, I think it was due to all of the Black Friday online shopping. Luckily, in recent years, I have had very little holiday shopping to do.

A group of us QUILTING PODCASTERS host quilting sew in days on BLACK FRIDAY and other " store" holidays. There are often really neat little give aways... books, quilt shop donations, coupons and gift certificates, charm packs, FQs etc. All kind of goodies. We meet up on Twitter to post pics of our projects under production. We use the hang dash #bfsi to comment and meet in one twitter group..... It is a lot of fun and open to all. Next sew in will probably be NEW YEARS but there may or may not be give aways.

Sorry, Black means they are making a profit. Red means they are not. Too early to be responding to posts
