Does anyone know how to tighten the belt on a Featherweight? I just got a free arm and it was shipped with the belt loose. Nothing in the book pertaining to belt maintenance.

I don't have a free arm, but a 221. The book Featherweight 221 by Nancy Johnson-Srebro shows a screw connecting the motor to the machine as you are looking at it from the front of the machine. Loosen the screw about one turn and allow the motor to drop downward until the belt has correct tension, then tighten screw. The tension should only be enough to keep the belt from slipping.

Thank you! I tried that and it did not work. I set up another 221 I have and compared the two. Both look the same and my non free arm sews beautifully. The motor makes the noise but the belt does not turn. The person I bought it from is on vacation for three weeks so I guess I will wait for his return for help.

Success! Coni I retried your idea and this time it worked! Apparently I wasn't aggressive enough. This time I lifted straight up and held the motor tight while I tightened the motor screw.
