Testing the Westalee ruler foot for Bernina

    Hi gang,
I finally got my Westalee ruler foot after about four weeks and yesterday I tested it out. It seems to work just fine. I had no problems holding the ruler and stitching at the same time, and the foot performed well. It tells you in the accompanying literature that you cannot lower your needle while your foot is raised, and when I tried it, my machine just stopped, puzzled, like "what do I do now?:" hmy:
But when I turned it off and back on, it was all fine. So I made a little video. It is only the second video I have ever tried, the first just trying out the camera. And I did it by myself, so my hands are a little in the way, but I think you can get the idea. Here's the link:

I will probably also buy the Bernina 96 foot if it ever becomes available for us. But this will work just fine until then.

    Betty Jo,

Thanks so much for the video. It looks like the foot works really well and I may invest in one.

Thanks for the video, Betty Jo. What number is your adapter foot? Does anyone know if the adapter foot is different for different Berninas?

Thanks for the demo, BJ. Congratulations on getting it done. I am guessing there will be more to come. Nice work!

Brenda, I have a Nancy's Notion adapter for Bernina new style, short. It is the same as number 77, I believe. There are two Bernina adapters, I believe...old style, and new style. I don't know any more about it except I have both styles..old style for my 1230 and new style for my 350 and 830. Oh, and there may be a snap on also.

Thanks. You're welcome Lois, and yes, more to come. I am just learning videos. I was just talking with my daughter-in-law to figure out how to place the camera in the future so my hands don't get in the way.

              Betty Jo,
You did a wonderful job for your first video. I am not very proficient with technical things, so I was so impressed.
Thank you so much for sharing what you are learning. Like many quilters, I am a visual person. If "a picture is worth a thousand words", your video was worth a whole lot more!.

Thanks Judith. I am a visual person also, and like seeing videos. We'll see where this goes.

Thanks for the info on the adapter, Betty Jo. It is nice to know that the Westalee foot is a good option.

You're welcome/ I would say, sew slower than normal with it.

The westalee is still a hopping foot. Does the Janome set up for bernina 830 an 880 hop? I don't think it does. There has been much discussion on the yahoo 830 group.
I found the westalee foot hops onto the thin ruler they use. BUT I am not proficient with FMQ so please listen to Judith. Janet

Hi Janet, I think that it's actually the machine that determines if it hops or how much or not. The Westalee foot has no spring, so it would be dependent on the movement of the machine. Also, if you get longarm rulers, they are 1/4 inch wide and are less likely to get under your foot. Even so, it is still possible, so you have to take care and practice.

Thanks Judith, you are correct about it being the machine that makes the hopping. My BERNINA 830 hops. I think I will like the westalee and ruler work once I get better at FMQ.
