I just watched Amy Johnson's Craftsy class on quilting with rulers. One of the students is using the Bernina 96 ruler foot (from a long arm machine) successfully on her Bernina 780. I called my local shop to see about ordering one and am waiting to hear back.

Looking online at bernina.com I see that the Ruler Foot 96 is compatible with all the other quilting feet I use on my 820. It is part of the Ruler Work Kit which includes a ruler base and a ruler. So I'm ordering one. I'll let the list know if I get one.

I got the #96 foot for my Bernina 770. I just didn't tell the shop that it was for my domestic so I wouldn't get a lecture. It works great! Like someone mentioned earlier on this topic, you just have to be careful to always drop the foot before dropping your needle since the needle bar will hit the foot if the foot is up when you drop the needle. I just did some 1/16" and 1/8" straight line quilting on a wallhanging using Lisa Calle's rulers and this foot and it worked great! Just got a little pain in my wrist from holding the ruler down. This was my first try at ruler work with my Bernina, so hopefully I'll figure out a better way to hold things as I do more. Enjoy your foot once you get it!

What height rulers are you using?

You want to use the 1/4" longarm rulers. Otherwise the ruler will slip under the foot and cause major problems. Of course, I'm still talking Berning which has a hopping foot. If your machine has a foot that doesn't hop, I've heard you can use thinner rulers. But I have not experience with that myself.

I ordered quilt foot from store in US that carries the Westalee ruler foot and it came as pkg. deal that included a couple of rulers. Check with your bernina dealer, but they ordered me the low-shank adapter #77.

Also, watched lass on Craftsy where hey talked about making your own ruler any shape or size you want by creating template out of foam board. I believe you should use 2 layers of foam board glued together. Then use push pins glued in place for handles. I really love this idea. I'm thinking paw prints to start with.

I haven't tried the foam core, but I would think you would also want to put some little sand paper dots or silicon stickers on the bottom since it seems like the foam corewould slip a lot.

                            Hello,

I have good news, my friend is working for Bernina Switzerland, she received a mail from Bernina " Info Gate", this type of information is given to all Bernina's agents and dealers, she showed me this mail, it is saying : the Long arm foot N°96 should not be used at all for domestic sewing machines as it can make severe damages to the machine BUT They are working in making a special ruler foot for domestic machines, they are not saying when this foot will be available but. as soon as my friend has this information, I shall give it to you.

                              Hello,
I have good news about the BERNINA ruler foot. A ruler foot has been now finallized, The number is 96 ruler foot for domestic machines, it will be available in USA very soon, you can maybe already ask your BERNINA dealer, by specifying it is the new 96 foot for domestic machines and not the one for the Q BERNINA machine. In Europe this foot will be available later on, fall (automn) 2016. Have a nice quilting.
