True - it also means that there is only one way to hang the Union Jack. If you look closely you will see that on the left the red cross of St Patrick is lower down in the white band, yet on the right it is higher up, this is because on the left St Andrew's White saltire takes precedence over St Patrick, and on the right St Patrick takes precedence over St Andrew.Originally posted by ReetzbobeetzWonderful quilts ladies, thanks for the photos.
We were just talking about St. Patrick's Flag over dinner this evening and my daughter informed us that the Union Jack is a combination of the Saltire of St Patrick (which is a red X on a white background) together with the original flags of Scotland, Wales and England. I learn something new every day.

Interesting! I never noticed the asymetry before. (And obviously, neither did several who have posted images of the Union Jack on the Web!)

Thank's for posting the pictures of the wonderful quilts at the Harrogate show, I really must make an effort to get to that show, all I need to do is talk my DH into a holiday in Yorkshire.
