I've just come back from Festival of Quilts in Birmingham and can hardly keep my eyes open.

There wereover 1000 quilts, plus over a dozen special exhibitions. I didn't manage to look at everything, but I was delighted to see that the traditional quilts are holding their own. Over the last couple of years it looked as if 'Innovative' and 'Contemporary' quilts were starting to take over. I'm delighted that some kind of balance is maintained, because I like traditonal quilts and art quilts. In both areas you find sublime work, and also downright aweful ones. Every year I totally disagree with the judges when all the winners are announced (shrugging shoulders). Looking at quilts is so very subjective. I like that because it keeps the quilting world lively and vibrant.

Ricky, his special evening, his workshop, his gallery of work, and just having him around the show all day, was definitely the highlight of Festival of Quilts this year. I bet he has aquired a whole new lot of 'groupies'.

I think I'll sleep very well tonight, and won't get up early tomorrow.

Lorchen, your quilt show must have been WONDERFUL! I talked to several people at my guild mtg. yesterday about the Long Beach show and they said the same thing as JoAnne--no traditional, just art quilts, and they were disappointed. They also said the way the quilts were displayed was "weird." Of course, I would have preferred to be at a bad show to having surgery!
