I love anything by Barbara Brachman. She has done tons of research on old quilt patterns. Her specialty seems to be the ones that used to be in the papers, such as in Kansas City as the west was first being settled. Her books often contain lots of fun information about the lives of the settlers and the women who made the quilts back then.

Bobbie Aug has several excellent books that show antique quilts. Two other "must have" books are "The American Quilt" by Rob Kiracofe and "America's Quilts and Coverlets" by Sanford and Bishop.
Also, look at http://www.quiltindex.org and http://www.quiltstudy.org, two tremendous websites with indexes you can search--a wealth of knowledge at both of those.
