        If you just spray with starch and let it air dry, it WILL draw up! If you spray with starch and iron it dry, you can control the flatness.
        Margo--thanks for the advice on starching. I started the applique today and the starched background worked great for machine applique--no puckering at all.

          Glad you like it Debbie! I use a lot of starch for both piecing and applique, and find that it makes either process much neater and more accurate!
          Of course, I always wash all the starch out of my quilts as soon as the binding is on!

            Dear Margo;

            Are you using like Niagara Spray starch?

              Barbara, I use lots of starch and find it more economical to mix my own. I use Sta-Flo and mix it half and half with water in a spray bottle. Here is one of my tutorials that shows how I starch my fabrics for piecing:

                Barbara, your HST quilt looks wonderful! I vote for the dark blue that is down near the floor. I think it would have a very deep, rich feel to it, then. Be sure to share it once it is finished!

                Rita, I love your changing scenery! You live in a beautiful area of the world!

                    I have advanced and yes it is too big for my washing line already.
                    now I just have to round up a gaggle of geese for the outer border, finalise the design for the back, be brave enough to get it made into a sandwich (never done one this large before-bites nails!). For the quilting I am thinking about Welsh style spirals and leaves.

                      WOW!! Rosemary it's looking fabulous! And how appropriate to use the Friendship Star block!! You do such creative stuff, I can't wait to see the rest of it assembled and what you decide to put on the back!

                      BTW....maybe you could have a long-armer baste it together for you with Superior's VANISH?? Then you can do the quilting without worrying about it shifting.

                        And there was me thinking that I was doing the Ribbon Star for the outer border, like this one :wink:

                              Oooh, I want to see a photo of the finished quilting. I've always wanted to do the Welsh style of quilting- I have a couple of books about it but haven't done it yet. I'm part Welsh on my Mother's side so feel a call to that style. Kathy
