I've just discovered the "Farmer's Wife Quilt" and have seen quite a bit about it on the Internet from a few years back. Has anyone finished one? Did you buy 'the' book? Some places I read there are 111 blocks, and then someone says they have 140? Any info or scoop on this project would be appreciated. Templates? I think I'm going to try one. Very soon. After I get my mug rugs done. I like it better than the 'Dear Jane' and I see that normally the blocks are 6 inches. Did any of you do the 'quilt-along' thing or do you know a group that is currently doing one? Sorry for all the questions, but if only one is answered, that's okay.

    Any advice/warnings are welcomed?

I have not done the official FW quilt but last year our guild did a similar quilt as our BOM. It was 56 6" traditional blocks set on point so a bit smaller than the FW. I have all my blocks done and next up would be the sashing and cornerstones and setting the top together.

My best advice: STARCH!!! Lots of it!! Use a thin thread like Aurifi 50wt for piecing. Paper piece any oddball blocks. Many of the 6" blocks have 20 or more pieces (some have over 50!) in them, so careful cutting, sewing and pressing is required. Just take it slow and you'll do fine!

      Have fun!

Thanks, Michelle, for the advice. Margo introduced me to STARCH, and it's the best!

Maybe it would actually be easier to hand piece?

I guess that depends. I didn't have any trouble piecing my 6" blocks but if I had hand peiced them, I know for sure two things:

              1) they'd be wonky as all get out
              and
              2) they'd never get done!

              LOL

Thanks for the comments. A few things to consider.

It looked easier than the dear Jane, but now after reading your comments, I'm not so sure. I'd love to challenge/sew along with you, Marilyn, when you're ready to begin. That way, you'd have company. And, we'd both have a cheer leader!
