I'm searching for a technique that I thought I saw on one of the TQS shows. You sew scraps of fabric together to make a "new piece of fabric", then cut a shape out and do a type of reverse applique. In the demo the fabric was made with black and white fabrics. The shape was the outline of a sitting cat. Lay the shape on the pieced fabric and cut out the shape. Then you draw the same cat shape on a square of regular yardage. Next cut out the negative space (makes a hole in the middle) leaving a 1/4 inch edge to turn under. Place this piece on top of the scrappy cat cutout and applique.

Would sure like to see this again. Does anyone know which show this was shown on? ....hoping it was TQS? Thanks for your help.

Try show 111 - Ann Fahl. Let me know if that works for you!

My membership level doesn't allow me to see this episode so I'm pretty sure it's now the one. I saw this technique recently so I'm feeling like it would be in a more recent series. Maybe I'm confused and didn't see it on TQS.

      But thanks for anyway.

Shirley, that sounds like a Jan Mullen technique, she did a book called "reverse applique with no brakez". I know she was on Simply Quilts and she might have been a guest on The Quilt Show. Hope this helps.

Thank you, thank you Kathy. As soon as I saw "Simply Quilts" I knew that's where I saw it. A few weeks back I was reviewing some old recordings of the shows and now I remember that's where I saw it. Now I can quit torturing my poor memory.....except now I've got to figure out which tape it was on!!

I had a lot of those old Simply Quilts shows on my DVR and stupidly, I deleted many of them
I wonder if there is any way to get those on DVD?
Yeah, I know TQS is better but there were some real gems on Simply Quilts.

Last I knew, HGTV's website still had SQ shows available for viewing. You could only see SEGMENTS, but that's probably all you need.

Thanks Beth for reminding me about that. I'll check it out this weekend. While looking, though, I'll probably get lured into even more ideas for projects that I don't have time to do!! Ain't it fun? Can't believe Kathy even remembered the designer's name. Wish my memory functioned so well.

                  Ya'll have a great weekend!

Shirley I think this is the Kitty you are talking about it from Jan Mullen's book Reverse Applique with no Brakes. I did a class with her some years ago and the quilt starry nights on my profile is done using this technique, I used up so many scraps it was great. Dorothy UK

OMG that's the one, Dorothy!! I'm going to search my Simply Quilts recordings this weekend. There's so much you can do with this technique. I've already sewn some scrappy pieces together to make my "new piece of fabric". I want to do the cat but I'm also thinking that "folksie" heart shapes would make cute blocks. Could also use for bags and totes, kindle and book covers, animal shapes for kids quilts and the list goes on. It's really fun sewing all those scraps together and I feel so good using up every bit of my expensive fabrics. Makes this traditional quilter feel kinda artsie. Also going to search for Jan's book.

Thanks again. TQS is the best!
