    No Escape!

I work at a Biloxi casino. I was "sitting box" at a craps game and talking to one of the dealers about lottery fantasies. He said he'd buy me a present if he hit the big one and asked what I wanted. I said I wanted a $10,000 sewing machine! He laughed. One of the players was listening and said "You want a Bernina?" I smiled and said "No! I wanna a Gammill! Do you know a quilter?" He rolled his eyes and said "Oh yeah, I know a quilter. She keeps me broke." Poor guy! He was probably thinking he could get away from quilty stuff at a casino-no luck there!

I've told my OH and daughter that if anything happens to me, to sell the lot not bin it! I can't believe how much this simplistic hobby now costs!

Mind you, I've loved every minute of replacing everything I lost and some!

My 18 year old son had a similar experience with his girlfriend's mother.

She was sewing a Halloween costume while he was over and he noticed that she had a Bernina machine.

He had heard me commenting about the new Bernina 830 and how expensive it was and he said to her, "Wow! You have a Bernina! My mom will be SOOOO jealous!"

The mother was shocked that he knew anything about sewing machines (and didn't really even know what he was talking about because she bought hers used several years earlier and didn't even know of the new machines out now).

Next time I saw her, she commented that "Charlie sure knows his sewing machines!"

Our kids learn by osmosis, or whatever it's called.

A few weeks ago my younger son spent a few hours with me and answered the phone when it rang. I heard him say that I couldn't come to the phone, then listen and explain 'I'll get her to ring you back, but right now it would be a minor disaster if the fabric glue dries whilst Mum is on the phone. That appliqué is tricky and she needs to get a really smooth curve.' He then came back to me: 'Mum, can you ring Dorothy. I don't think she understood what I was telling her.'

By the way, this son is not interested at all in anything quilt related, but loves his bed quilt.

He is 28, Lorna, and patiently listens to me talking about quilting now and then whilst eating everything that's in my fridge and kitchen cupboards. I always think that it's into one ear and out of the other with him. But sometimes he surprises me with what gets stuck. Like, his older brother and partner will have their first baby in May and this future uncle 'appears' not to be interested. That is until you overhear him telling a friend that '21 week scans of unborn babies show a lot of amazing detail including big noses'. Giggle......

Sherry - I thought you were going to say that he won and bought you the machine! Wouldn't that be something!!

Once a friend of my son was over and saw me sewing on my Viking. He said sort of proud, my mom has a Bernina! She'd gotten hers used and was very proud of it!

Those boys will surprise us won't they?
