An age for quilting????

Does age have anything to do with quilting???? :? I started when I was 27 years young I am 46 now)...and never found that my age was important at all, I just do what I love!! :lol: I firmly belive age is just a number on a piece of paper and should never put us of what we want to do. My first time in an alpine sloap I was 32 and got a licence to drive a truck (may come useful as my stash is growing)....and now at 46 I am finishing University with a master degree (only boys my kids age in my class).
A day without a challange is a boring day. Without challanges our minds get stuck. If you want to do it, just do it no matter what anyone else say!!! :P

Hey I can relate to you Hanne-Grete. I started quilting when I was 28, now a couple years older than you. I started snow-boarding when I was 35, got my motorcycle license about that time. Went back to school for my masters at 40. But I still feel 20s or 30s. I ski and snowboard a couple times/week. Run or hike with my dogs almost daily. And somehow find time to quilt almost every day. And I have a great job as a Nurse Practitioner.

I have sewed all my life like many others have shared. I did a quilt in my teens and off and on thru my 20's. But it was late in my 30's that while I was extremely busy and had alot going that I started noticing that the really young at heart were people who had a passion for something. I started thinking about what in my life I had a passion for. Throughout that following year it became apparent it was quilting and I was on my way to allowing it to grow into a full bloom passion.

and i have to say that in all honesty many of the pics of those who post here look amazingly young ...

Eileen/Lucy, you're my new best friend!!! On behalf of all us 'oldies', I say a hearty thank you!! I've also heard that children keep you young. I had mine at 32 and 35, and as long as they were in school, I felt okay. But when they graduated, I immediately felt old. I really think having a passion and keeping busy are the keys to staying young.

Hanne-Grete, my piece of paper is going to get another year added this month!!

I envy those of you who are getting your motorcycle license. My DH and two kids did that a few years ago. My daughter was 14 and could drive a motorcycle, but not a car. If I didn't have a bad back, I'd be right there with you. Oh well, maybe it's the Lord's way of keeping me in check!! That's okay, I'll do the things I can.

I think the majority of people who don't quilt just aren't aware of what is happening today in the world of quilting.

They just think of the more "traditional" quilts (which are absolutely gorgeous, but perhaps bring to mind their mothers or grandmothers era). As we are all well aware, just from this website, the quilt has been taken to new and breathtaking heights. The wonderful hand dyed fabrics, the batiks, and the incredible designs (thanks Ricky, Alex, and all the amazing mentors out there).

I'm 53, and am psyched that I'll have at least another 40 years to quilt

I know what you mean Judy. A couple of weeks ago I was talking to the (then) leader of my girl's girl scout troop about fundraising ideas. I suggested having them make a quilt featuring the troop number and logo and maybe hold a raffle for it at the church. (later remembered that GS are not allowed to use games of chance, grrrrr...) Anyway the leader seem put off by the idea, hemming and hawing over it and saying nobody would want to buy raffle tickets for a quilt. "Why not?" I asked her. "Well you see it's just the wrong time of year to buy quilts," was her matter of fact answer. WHAT!!! :shock: :shock: :shock: When I asked what she meant by that she said simply spring was coming, weather was getting warmer, and "nobody wants to buy a quilt in the spring when they can't get any use out of it till winter. " :roll: I tried to explain that I was talking about a wall hanging art quilt, not a bed quilt but she seemed totally baffled "Who would want a quilt you can't use?" :? The very thought that a quilt could be a peice of art that you hung on a wall and not just something you wrapped up in to keep warm seemed a bit beyond her lol. :lol:

Well, that leader quit two weeks ago, and as the only one who has even had a rudimentary leadership training (3 years ago one session) it is falling to me to take over the troop - I think I might make quilters of them yet... I'm thinking tye quilts for Project Linus as a communitee service project at some point... :wink:

Yes, quilters are old, young and in between, but I, personally, enjoy the fact that quilting is and can be enjoyed by so many different ages.

My college age daughter working on her second quilt can hold a conversation with and find (to her amazement) that she has a lot in common with a 75 year old who began quilting by hand and who now does "art quilts" and sends them out to longarmers to quilt!

If you get quilters together, age differences seem to melt away. We are all searching for the same thing -- for that special quilt to admire, for the great new tool to help us cut, sew and quilt perfectly, for truly wonderful fabric, for new patterns, for luscious colors, for a quilt store we haven't seen before, etc.

A bus full of quilters will be a busy, noisy bus, and it will be filled with people of all ages.

I started embroidery, sewing and maybe even quilting before I had my first birthday. Now that sounds pretty outrageous but listen to my tale of wow. I was born on the 29th of February in __00 sometime I might tell you the exact year if you really want to know but given that I didn't have a birthday until I was FOUR YEARS OLD!!!!
In a few days I will have another real birthday (this one is 17 so I will let you all do the math ) and have sewn, embroiderered, beaded, wordburned, crafted and QUILTED ever since. Life would not be the same with out my "hobbies" (PASSIONS) and I would not be the same person without them.

SO THEN I AM SEVENTEEN going on 68 (ok I did the math) and have never been happier. Enjoy your life whatever your age and do what you love.
