quilt shop pet
i hate to go to a quilt store that has a resident cat. i am allergic to cats and i resent having a cat climb over the table where i am trying to plan out my next quilt or looking up at me and purring because i am invading its space. :x

Mary, I own a dog and I love her to death, but I don't bring her to my shop. I've been in shops with pets, and it makes me think 'fur and dander.' I don't personally care for cats, my family is allergic, and many times a large dog can just plain get in the way while you're shopping. While many people don't mind, I do, ESPECIALLY when the shop owner isn't fastidious about cleaning up the drifting hair or oblivious to their pets' odor. I simply want my fabrics clean and fresh when I buy them.

I'm a cat lover with two of them on my personal quilt staff, lol, but I have to agree with those with allergies. The quilt shop is not the place to have cats, dogs, or any pets. Not only does it cause a problem for those who shop there with allergies, but what if the person is making the quilt for someone with an allergy? I know a lot of people who do not prewash their fabrics, so this could pose a problem.

I had a cat, wonderful animal, named Scraps for several years. She came to me through a rescue and ended up living at the shop quite by accident. She was a beautiful Russian Blue that was spayed and declawed. Occasionally I would have a customer complain about her or express a concern over pet alergies and we were always quick to put her in the back. If we knew a customer expressed a concern and saw the customer coming toward the door, we would put Scraps in the back room before the customer ever entered the store. The majority of my customers loved Scraps, however. She was a perfect shop cat - clean, did not shed, and (best of all) she was a loner and would never interfere or invade a customers space.
Sadly, one day Scraps decided to leave Stitchin' Heaven. She stayed inside those years and never indicated in any way she would go outside. But, apparently someone left the door open and she went outside and never came back.
We still have Scraps on our logo, on our website, and in our hearts. We miss her!

I would be more inclined to shop where there was a store pet. Of course I do volunteer with a humane society lol and my daughter and I have a total of 4 cats and 3 dogs and fosters in and out.
We just took a trip to Asheville NC and it was a very pet friendly place. Although there were none in the fabric shop we went to. The bead store had a dog and a cat , and another shop had a dog. We loved it. I really feel sorry for people with pet allergies.
My dog is my constant companion.

I love cats and have had them all my life until my allergies got so bad and my DH said NO MORE CATS! He didn't like to see me so ill and he was right. I now have a wonderful loving dog that came from a shelter and we have both spoiled it terribly!

Perhaps quilt fabric is not selling because others do not think that the kitty climbing all over the wonderful bolts is all that neat. Maybe this patricular shop owner should be told this before kitty kitty starts unravelling yarn. I love cats, dog, and all of God's other creatures but I feel that they do not belong in a place of business. Unless of course that business is to sell, or fix them. Rachel
As my Gramma used to say everything has a place. Just somethings aren't in the places we are, so let leave it here. ( She was usually referring to the turtle, frog, mouse, salamander, or whatever else I had decided to "rescue" that day)

One of my favorite thread shops has a resident cat. I am really REALLY allergic to cats so I just ask the owner to put the cat in the office when I come in because the shop is really small. But all of the threads that I buy are hanging high up in the shop or are wrapped in plastic.
A cat in a quilt shop doesn't bother me if it will be put in an office if I ask for that but I do not like to see that same cat roaming around on the fabric. The couple of shops that I have been in with cats have their fabric off the floor and primarily stored vertical so it is less likely that the cat has roamed around it when I wasn't there.
But for all of us allergy sufferers, Quilt Shop Owners and staff, leave your perfume at home and put the cat or dog out of our presence if we ask. And for you animal lovers, you can give that cat or dog treats when I am not there Thanks.
Ann - who is allergic to so many things that avoiding an attack is crucial.
P.S. I love cats and dogs and wish I could have them but know it is not in the cards anymore.

I must appologize I too love all animals and for a long time wanted a cat. However due to allergies of my own could not have one. That is until one very special hospice patient knowing the rules about giving and recieving gifts. The staff is not allowed under any condition to recieve a gift. Anyway she had written in her will in blue marker "Give Shaggy my cat to Rachel's little boy Elijah". Now how do you argue with that. 1. she is dead. 2. She didn't break the rule. I really love Phyllis and her cat and I have learned to live with the allergies. I still don't care for the cat hair though.

Even though I am allergic to cats, I have two myself and they sleep in our bed.My allergy isn't that bad, and the joy I get from my animals is priceless.
I would never hesitate to shop at a store that had a resident dog or cat. In fact, there is a chain of pet stores in my area that has a resident cat in each store, and my husband and I make a point of patronizing them because of it.

Fortunately, I'm only allergic to one thing (my ex-husband), so I have no problems with pets in shops (if they are well-behaved).
But I have a friend who is extremely allergic to cats. If I go and see her in the late afternoon, for example, and I have stroked a neighbourhood cat in the morning, my friend starts feeling ill within minutes and has to use an epi-pen. This lady has plenty of money to spend, but would never go into a shop where there is a resident cat, even if it's out of sight.
I guess shop owners have to decide what's more important: Having their pet in the shop or selling their goods.
