Quilting a DJ?
Well, I've gotten a boatload of DJ blocks under my belt, and am enjoying it so much that I joined a swap at the DJ list (10 blocks, 5 of A-13 and 5 of G-9).
I'm piecing the blocks by hand and am thrilled at how easily they go together, even the ones other folks have said are difficult. I particularly love Papa's Star, the one with the one-inch Ohio Star in the center. Mine turned out amazing, and I still can't believe how tiny that Ohio Star is! I've heard horror stories about Nan's Naiad, and can't wait to give it a try.
Anyway, what quilting motif have any of you used to quilt your DJ? I plan to quilt it by hand, and don't know if each block is quilted echoing that particular block's design, or whether the entire quilt is quilted with an overall design, such as a grid.
Thanks for any ideas! I won't be at the quilting stage for a while, but like to plan ahead.

I have been making mine the past several years but I have really slowed down. I have seen several DJ and most are quilted as desired being dictated by the individual blocks.
I have already decided that I am going to have the sashing quilted by machine by a quilter... with regular thread matching my sashing. ( Not the washable basting thread that some people use to do this technique. ) I then plan to hand quilt the blocks individulaly. Knowing myself this is the only way I would ever get this quilt hand quilted.....I realize that some people believe in sending it out to the Amish, but I want this quilt to be just mine ( and Jane's)
To me it is the process that is important.

I've started another quilt (lap) and think I'll practice on that one before I begin seriously on my DJ. I want DJ hand quilted but I want it hand quilted by ME. Even if it takes me ten years! I'll let you know when I start and how I decide to do it but right now I think I'll echo the pattern of the block and quilt triangles in the triangles.

Hi -- this question isn't about quilting a Dear Jane, but I do think they are nice hand quilted. My question is that I have been using only the book -- do any of you know what width to make the sashing strips or are they very narrow for the pie shapes to fit on the top.
I only have about 10 blocks to finish and wanted to get that put together and then start on the border.
Happy New Year and happy sewing.

I am assembling the quilt as I go, top to bottom, including the triangles. Here is what is working for me (documented somewhere, either in the book or on Brenda Papadakis' Web site):
Sashing for the right side of each individual block is 1 inch x 5 inches, and sashing for the bottom of each individual block after adding the side sashing is 1 inch x 5.5 inches.
Sashing for the top and bottom between the blocks and the triangles is 3/4 inch x 65 inches, and sashing for the sides is 3/4 inch x 66 inches.
This is assuming that you're using the square and triangle templates, or are measuring exactly!
Hope that helps!

I know you want to hand quilt it but just for conversation.... .... I'm machine piecing & hand appliquing mine but will machine quilt it on my domestic machine.
I know it isn't how Jane did hers but this is Joyce's.
I think I'll quilt between the blocks first and then quilt in each block as it fits for the particular block.
