What is the best book for beginners???

This is an old post so I hope someone will see it. I want to buy a quilting book for my good friend who has just started quilting. I have one that is very good but I didn't see it at Joannes. And it doesn't show much info on how to cut with a rotary cutter. So what book is comprehensive for the beginner???

Better Homes & Gardens Complete Guide to Quilting is the best one I have in my quilt library. It includes sections on Tools, Notions, & Supplies, Fabric & Color, Planning Pieced Blocks, Planning the Quilt Top, Cutting, Hand Piecing, Machine Piecing, Applique, Assembling the Quilt Top, Batting & Backing, Hand & Machine Quilting, Binding & Finishing, Specialty Techniques, and a Glossary and Index.

For a basic book with simple patterns, First-Time Quiltmaking by Landauer Books would be a good choice.

I second the BHG suggestion. My sister bought it for me for Christmas last year and I do reference it quite often. Well-written instructions, clear pictures, and TONS of information!

I have the Fons & Porter "Quilter's Complete Guide". Not only do I go back to it time after time, I loan it out to my friends who are beginner quilters. It's never failed to help.

I also like the Fons and Porter book. Guess most good books have the same qualities -- comprehensive, well written, great pictures/illustrations, and much valuable information. Even though I'm an experienced quilter, I still return to it time and again when I have to relearn something.

Alex Anderson's books are all excellent. They are not huge and scary, and the instructions are very easy to follow for a beginner. And if you can't get to a shop, you can order them from her website.

Don't forget about the binding! Here is an excellent book for that. I have the older one and when I went looking for it for my daughter-in-law I discovered the book had been reprinted. Yeah! There were only two used ones of the first printing available.
