    Antique quilt block name?

My friend has a gorgeous antique solid purple and white quilt made by her great-aunt. I'd really like to replicate this quilt and would like to find a block pattern for it. This quilt is made of a block that looks like a purple star. It has a large single piece purple octagon in the center, with squares (made of purple and white quarter square triangles) hinging off of each side of the octagon alternating with white triangles at the points of the octagon forming a large purple star on a white background. I hope my description is clear. Does anyone know the name of this block? I think if I know the block name I'd have better luck finding a pattern for it.

sounds like it might be a feathered star. check out Marsha McCloskey's website - her book is great for explaining how to make these beautiful pieces.

      Hi Teri (a.k.a. littleflower),

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the block I'm looking for is not a feathered star. The octagonal center of the block is the same, but that's where the similarity ends. I'm going to sketch it out to post, because my description apparently isn't clear enough.

      Thanks again,
      Nancy

Nancy, Do post a sketch. I've looked in my 5,500 Quilt Blocks Designs by Maggie Malone book and really couldn't find exactly what you described. Similar but not quite right.

I made a sketch which you can view at this link

I'm certain this is a documented block, but I haven't had any luck finding it. Thanks for your help.

It looks like a variation of the Carpenters Wheel or Star. It's beautiful that's for sure.

The closest I came up with is a block named - The Peaceful Valley Quilt. It's only variation is that 4 sides of the octagon are a bit bigger than the other 4. Otherwise it's the same. I googled the name and couldn't fine anything more on it. Unfortunately, there wasn't any documentation in my book as to where the author got this block info.

                  Teri,
I'm glad you agree that it's a beautiful block--you should see the actual quilt. However, I don't see enough similarity with the Carpenter's Wheel/Star to think it's a variation, so I'm still looking.

                    Julie,

My internet search on "peaceful valley" + "quilt" only returned an appliqued picture quilt. I'll check out the book at the library.

                    Thanks,
                    Nancy

I decided to search "The Quilt Index" for Peaceful Valley, but did not get any hits. My instincts suggested that the block should be named "Octagon Star" and voila, I found an antique quilt made with this block. You can see the quilt at http://www.quiltindex.org/basicdispl...useum-a0a7c6-a

I'm thrilled to find the name, but think I'll have to draft my own pattern.

Thanks Teri & Julie for your help,
                      Nancy

BLESS YOU for trying such a difficult pattern. This looks like something that would be very complicated. Do keep us posted on your progress even if you only get a few done for a wall hanging... I bet it will be beautiful.

You block may be Wheel of Fortune. I found it in my EQ6 and found a reference to it at the following site. It shows it as a block pattern and actually is an easy pattern. There is a modern Wheel of Fortune block that looks nothing like this. Hope this is what you are looking for.

Wow, Sandy, that's the pattern. Nancy, given a bit of time I could probably come up with directions for you. At this point it would have to wait until mid-November, however, I'd be happy to do this for you.
