Looking for a pattern for a fabric block

I don't know how to explain this, but I saw somewhere a pattern where you cut out your fabric into the finished block size (say 12.5). You lay the fabric squares on top of each other in different combinations (red, blue, white, green, yellow, blue, red, white, etc), then you cut the large squares into 3 pieces (square, rectangle, rectangle).
By taking one piece of one of the fabrics and putting it to the bottom you start to create your blocks so each block is a bit different, but using all the same fabrics (is this ringing a bell with anyone????) I don't know if I'm explaining it well, but I want to show a coworker what this looks like, as she wants me to make a quilt for her and this is what I was thinking.

OR do you have an idea for a fairly simple block, large size for an oversized king quilt? I'm thinking 12-18" blocks. I've thought about a modified rail fence using 5 fabrics so it looks woven rather than railed. (wow, I hope someone understands my gobbledygook!) but I'd like a few ideas to show her. And Simple is Key!

    Thanks for your brainstorming!

It sounds like shuffle the deck method shown on show # 603. It would be fun and easy.

It is a fast way to cut out simple quilts, but remember that you need to make the first cut large enough for all the seam allowances that you plan to make. In other words, that first piece needs to be bigger than the finished size!!

Check out the supersized blocks at this link http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=6274 They are 35" blocks, but you could make them smaller, if you prefer. I want to make a quilt using simple supersize blocks in the center of the quilt with smaller blocks of the same pattern in the border. Here's an example of how they might look together http://www.flickr.com/photos/stitchi...aves-nphinstl/
