quilting hexagons
since hexagons are now the biggest thing, I hope that some of you have quilted a hexagon quilt before. I have a panel surrounded by a pieced hexagon border, then another border outside of that. I know how I will quilt the panel and the outer border, by machine and following the designs. The hexagons are hand pieced so there is no ditch. I'm stumped as how to quilt this part of it! Pretty sure that hand quilting 1/4 inch in from the seams is not going to happen .
This quilt was in one of those BH&G shop sampler mags a couple of years ago. they used what looks like a machine embroidery design inside each hexagon. That doesn't really strike my fancy, and also I couldn't do it anyway (no embroidery machine!).
I'm attaching a picture but it has to be in JPEG format so I'll be back
Any ideas welcome!

Kathy I have been thinking about how to quilt my hexagon quilt too, it's really a tricky conundrum! I asked Cindy Needham what she would do and she said that she would SID it. But because all the seams are openas it's hand-pieced and each side is only 3/4" I am worried that all I would be doing is stitching over my stitches and not the fabric at all! So I have a lot more thinking and figuring out to do on mine and I know how you feel. Have you seen what Geta did on this one:

And she's a member of TQS too. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. It's a beautiful quilt. Please post when you finish it.

Well, well! I just learned that hexies are 'in'. So, I see they are popular - wow!
...I suppose I began my hexies quilt about 7 years ago, and by the time I finish my project, maybe they will be out of style, but this gives me incentive! I do a lot in the car on road trips, all by hand. Maybe there is a road trip in my near future...I have no idea what the finished project will be - a pillow, wall hanging or a bed quilt. I've just been at it for years!!! I just loved the fabric!

Okay my 2 cents. I think that anything becides stitch in the ditch would take away from the feel of the quilt. the other hexie was a totally different feel with the colors and all. The focus is the center and border.. Hexies is an accent. So for me I would either SID or 1/4 away from seams. I am working on two hexie quilts and deciding what to do once done. good luck and let us know what you decide. It will be interesting to see what yo decide to do.

The seams on my hexies are open, I paper pieced them with whip stitching. I'm resisting hand quilting them but that might be an idea to consider with this quilt. I definitely need to watch the Mickey Deprey show.
Once I got going, they were fun to piece. The basting process was hard on my hands- I basted with thread rather than glue since I didn't want to wash out a lot of glue at the end.
