Trapunto
I would like to get some feedback on the types of batting people use for trapunto. I have used some trapunto techniques at times but I can never seem to achieve that wonderful, standout effect that I see on so many quits.
Also, can any suggest any books or videos that specifically address trapunto?

Anita Shackelford has a trapunto method using a cotton batting. I've used this method and it works really well. A piece of batting is placed right under the quilting area that is to be trapuntoed, a line of basting is done around the quilting design, and the batting is trimmed closely to the basting. The quilt top is then layered as usual with another layer of batting, the backing and the top. This way you don't have to "stuff" the batting into the areas where you want trapunto--there's already a double layer in the trapunto areas. I used this with hand quilting, but I don't see why machine quilting wouldn't work, too. Judy in Torrance

Similar to the method Judy wrote about, Sharon Schamber also does a method where you machine baste around batting using water soluable thread, trim, then put your quilt sandwich together and quilt.
This method has the added benefit of having you already having a line of stitching to follow---or improve on in my case  ---.
In the class I took with Sharon, she had us bring wool batting to use for the trapunto. It was my first time using it and it was just luscious !
Sharon generously shares many free videos about her techniques. You can look around at http://www.sharonschambernetwork.com

Thank you all for your feedback. I have actually used the method with the water soluble thread. The little bit of trapunto I've done looks ok but it just doesn't seem to stand out as markedly as those I've seen in quilts at some of the shows. Oh well, maybe it just takes more practice and experimentation!
