Does old cotton thread break more easily?

I bought some thread on sale that had been in the shop no one knows how long. When I tried to use some of it, it broke really easily. How long is the typical thread usable? These threads were 30 Wgt all cotton I believe. Lots of them were YLI. thanks for any light on the subject, Jan

I know that old cotton thread that has been exposed to light, sun and probably humidity can break easily. I have to test some of my old cotton threads that were left over from my garment making days so if it is in my box and looks old I pull some out and give it a tug. If I can break it easily by tugging it by hand I roll out some more and repeat. Sometimes only the top layer or two will break and if it is a large spool I hate to throw it away but if after one layer or so it is still breaking, it goes in the trash. I get frustrated enough quilting with good thread without adding the frustration of the thread breaking too.

I do have some decorative threads that break easy and sometimes they work on the bobbin if not on the top. But just plain cotton is out of here when it breaks.

Since YLI is a good brand I would check with the store where you bought it and see how old it is. (IF they know) and then complain to the company. I know Superior stands behind their product. YLI should too. Ann _

Before you complain to YLI, try unreeling the first layer of thread on the spool--if it's just sun or light damage, the layers underneath may be just fine. I've had some experience with this, LOL.
