    Getting ready to dye

Is a dust mask stronger than a medical mask? There is a great article in Quilter's Newsletter on dyeing ombre fabric. It uses procyon MX I believe. I guess I could get the dust mask at home depot. Where is the best place to buy the dye, anybody know? Jan

I was able to purchase very small bottles of Procien Dye at the local art store. I had to readjust the amounts to mix with water, etc. If you live in a large area that has art stores, they will probably carry those dyes. Also I bought the dust mask at the art store, but will probably go to the respirator next time, just for safety.

There is a great tutorial with video by Theresa last summer on dying under the category "where to begin". Also don't forget to make a dust box, there is also a tutorial on that. She does a good job with instructions, then I had the courage to try it.

You can probably get everything you will need from Dharma!

The smell must be really bad and bad for you. What is this respirator mask and do they sell them at home depot and Dharma? Thanks Sharon and Margo. I think it's hard to find Ombre fabric anywhere. Jan

It's not the smell the powder is so fine that it will get into your lungs and cause major damage. ALWAYS wear a mask or respirator for safety and gloves. Also if possible mix it outside even with a dust box.

OK, what is a dust box and what does it and the respirator cost? I am imagining they are pretty expensive and the respirator pretty weird to wear. Jan

A dust box is a plastic box tall enough for water bottles and you cut two holes in the side and do all the dye mixing in it. Really if you watch Theresa tutorial she demonstrates how to make a dust box. The cost is a big tub from Walmart -- make sure it has a clear lid. Ask me how I know? LOL So maybe $10.00 for the tub.

The tutorial is extremely helpful, I can't tell you how much.

I was wondering about where to find this too - I had a search of all the Theresa members but couldn't find her or just missed the posting.

P.S. Just look at all those font colours to chose from!!! -

I think I have just found the answer myself.
At the bottom of the page you are allowed to 'return to dyeing' pages and Theresa's entries are right there for all to see - :!: I don't know how I didn't see these on the old forum pages because I thought I had read all there was about dyeing - obviously not :?

                      Thank you anyway Theresa
