    Backing fabric

Any ideas as to which fabric is used for backing and will TQS have backing kits for sale? Any suggestions for backing?

Jeannine, to my knowledge, there is no specific fabric that is recommended for the backing. Just use what makes your heart sing!

Jeannine, when i took classes from Sue Nickels in May, she actually had photos of her doing the quilting on the BOM, and you could see the backing in one of the pictures. As i recall, it was a wild, multicolor print. I'm a little less adventurous...I bought "Willow" by Timeless Treasures, pattern #FLEUR - C 4794. It's a turquoise print that seems to go pretty well with the colors in the top.

Very nice and will work well with top when choosing your quilting thread.

Nice choice. I think I'll do the same...

I purchased 8 yards of one of the turquoise fabrics from The Quilt Show store a month or so ago. At that time, they had plenty of both fabrics.

I need help determining the amount of backing fabric. I noticed in the fabric requirements, it states 5 yards. Is that if you are going to do the quilting on a regular sewing machine? This is only my second large quilt and I think I will probably send it to a long arm quilter. ( Either that or make a few smaller quilts before I even attempt to quilt it.) I certainly hate to mess it up after so much work. Does the long arm quilter need more fabric around the edges? Would eight yards be safer with the 44 wide fabric?

                Thanks

Winnie, the finished quilt size is 77-1/2" x 77-1/2". It would be a good idea to ask your longarmer how much extra fabric she likes to have and use that measurement!

5 yards is a generous amount for the backing if you do not have to match any design on the back which might require a little more yardage.

8 yards will leave you with a LOT of extra fabric.

                    Thanks Margo,

I found that the fabric I wanted to use is 45 wide, so the 5 yards will work with an extra 8 inches all around my quilt.
