    Self Threading needles

Sue Nickels recommends pulling the threads to the back with self threading needles. Thought this was a good idea. I have purchased both Fons and Porter and also Clover self threading needles and have yet to thread one. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or if there was a big secret to using these things. Thanks Carol

Carol and Margo, I just ordered those needles. I have the Clover ones and break the threads with a fair amount of regularity. The spiral eyes look great.

I really like the spiral eye needles, too. I do every once in a while have trouble with the little opening in the eye catching on the quilt as I pull it through, but that has happened less frequently as I've used the needles more. I like them a lot better than the Clover needles because I always seem to have trouble with breaking the thread when trying to get it into the Clover eye. But the spiral eye needles are a lot more expensive, so that's a consideration, too.

Thank you all for your responses. I had already invested in those two packs of needles, looked at the spiral type needle, but hesitated spending more money when the ones I had were useless to me. Have never succeeded in threading any without breaking the thread. Carol

I love these needles, hope we can get them in the UK someday.
I have the other sort and they are OK but sometimes the thread gets shredded

What a great invention! But we can't get them here. And the postage would probably be totally silly. We can get the easy thread needles but they do shred a lot and for some reason they disappear from my pin cushion faster than any other needle. Where do they go? Wendy? Are they under your bed?

The Spiral Eye needles thread completely differently than the self-threading needles.
In my opinion they are well worth the investment and will solve the thread breaking issue.

Maybe we could stick some in the mug rugs

   with my luck it would be withheld by customs. Although I did manage to send one from here to Tennessee without a problem. 8) Mind you, I didn't realize I had left it in the item.

I'll put that one (spiraleye) on my list of things to buy on my next visit to the USA - so many things we can't find in my part of the world.
I use the Fons&Porter one, but tends to shred the thread a little.
                        Thanks for the tips.

I took a machine quilting class with David Taylor, who shared his opinion of "self threading" needles. David said they do not work! The first time he used one he had the needle in one hand and the thread in the other and watched and waited...and watched and waited...and watched and waited...nothing happened. The needle did not self thread! Now just picture that sweet faced TQS favorite telling this story. We are all sitting there, listening intently waiting to pick up every word if advice this award wining quilter is going to share with us and this is how starts the class! It was funny...very funny!
Seriously, David uses self threading needles all the time and hand knots and buries every start and stop thread. I guess that is how you win the ribbons.
I have the best luck with clover self threading needles but when I used bottom line thread it did break on me. Alot.

  Bottomline would probably work, most of the time, with the Clovers, but how many times are we quilting the top layer with a thread that thin?

David is such a master. I'd never have the patience for what he does.
