Fabric for 2009 BOM
Now that a lot of you have finished the 2009 BOM, I was just wondering how the amount of fabric that was in the kit worked out. Was there any left or did it work out to be just about right. I am very slow and only working on May, but I will use the excuse that I was traveling in our Motor Home for 7 months. With 2 of those months spent in Alaska. Although I didn't get a lot of sewing done I did try to hit most of the quilts shops we passed.

I haven't used any of the kits (all of my BOMs have been scrappy) but I do know that Sue tries to allow extra because not everyone is really frugal with their cutting, and she wants to make sure that if someone makes a cutting error or if they decide to use a different fabric somewhere, that there will be enough to cover those choices. Better to have too much, than to risk running out and not being able to get replacement fabric.

ops: Well here I am once again at the beginning when I should be at the end.....I have all of the fabric, folded at home....I am visiting in California bay area...with my family and have a few minutes to get online and found this forum. I found the fabric on ebay and got all of it from there. I do not usually wash my fabrics before starting a project...but I am going to make an exception this time and as soon as I get home I will begin to wash and iron my fabric and devote my time to doing this quilt which I just love. Gotta get a customers quilt completed when I get home; but after that???? I must begin. would love to see the completed quilts in the gallery.

 well... I didnt order the kit, but I did order just about the amount of fabric listed in the initial pages - 1/2 yard of most prints was enough for not one but three quilts! So dont worry about not having enough. [of course I was always sharp in math and have been told to sshh because I looked at the picture and three of us got together when I figured out about how much/little fabric of each we needed] The fabrics were absolutely beautiful! So glad I did this - need to post my picture I guess- only have the last border left and havent posted one yet - sorry  I put an extra LaMoyne star in the middle - I'll have my daughter help me post it! Next years look great too - thanks Sue!

If you will check the Show & Tell page for this BOM, search for the completed quilts and you will see a few close-ups of how Sue quilted her original one. It is awesome!

Hi ltflyer,
You are not the only one getting around to the 2009 BOM. I just recently joined TQS and after seeing all of the beautiful quilts from everyone... I decided to try this one and not start on the 2010 BOM. I decided that when I needed some advice/help with it, someone who had completed it (ON TIME) could assist me. I also got some great color ideas for fabric choices after looking at the BEAUTIFUL completed quilts from everyone. If there is anyone running a year behind like me, maybe we can chat together about it. Thanks!!

I finished the piecing last night at 11:55 pm. I've got a great machine quilter who will quilt it for me. Looking at the finished top I can't believe that I actually made this all by myself. Thanks to Sue I learned a lot, and am sooo glad how she stressed "accuracy" as it was sure needed for this one. It truly turned out to be my "first" master piece. I purchased the fabric kit at the IQF back in 2008 and I too have a lot of fabric left over, love Mike's idea about using it on the '10 BOM, except that I am not participating this year, need to finish up other UFO's. Sue's directions for the 2009 BOM are great, and I also offer some tutorials for different techniques on my Webshots albums. You can always access them from my profile, but check them out here:

You also might want to start with my "test" to make sure that your seam allowance is accurate. Trust me! It MATTERS on this quilt! Be sure that you measure, cut, stitch and press ACCURATELY.

Just try different techniques and find what works best for you.
Good luck!
Margo

However....even if you are off a little, Sue's methods for adding the floater strips will help it all work out. It's just easier if your measurements are close to hers so you don't have to make any major adjustments.

Anyone have that figured out yet?

I hope to finish this week. I am enlarging to king size using some of Sue's suggestions and working things out as I go. My best tip is to Enjoy The Process! This was a learning experience both in methods and patience, mostly the later. Remember that when things feel tedious and you think you just can not face one more star. The results are so worth the internal fortitude it takes. I'm with those of you have said "I can't believe I made it"! It truly is a work of art. A huge thanks to Sue, Margo, and all the rest who posted hints, tips, and suggestions and answers to questions.
