    January 2009 Cutting Error

There is a small cutting error in the January 2009 instructions.

Page 3 Off-White Background: Only FOUR (4) 2 3/4" squares are needed for the center ring of triangles. You need 8 triangles so you need cut only 4 squares and then cut them in half. (BTW, I used another fabric for these center triangles, a soft gold as an accent.)

I've done a lot of paper piecing but have followed Sue's directions to the letter and LOVE the tiny stitches and not crossing into the seam allowances. When you sew a piece on upside down or backwards like I did (and you WILL!) you'll learn just how strong those little stitches are.

Also, I'm using Masterpiece thread, color # 154, and I love it. It's very fine but strong and takes up very little space in the units. Here's a tip: if your machine doesn't like those 3000 yd spools, wind 2 bobbins and thread the upper thread using a bobbin instead of the spool. Another advantage to this: you should run out of top and bottom thread at about the same time. Just wind two more bobbins and keep going.

My block will be done today and I'll post it in Show and Tell--is everybody having fun?

Thanks so much for catching this error, Barbara!! As many times as Sue and I have gone over the directions, it still happens!

If anyone else finds something wrong, please let us know!!

I'm looking forward to seeing finished feathered stars!!!!

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the other HST are for the white points on the setting triangles at the ends by the pink trianges and the narrow triangle strips. I'm not quite done but I did count my remaining HST and they count out just fine the way Sue has them. Those end triangles are larger than the others.

      Hope this isn't too confusing

By George, Sandy, you are right!!!

That's OK...we will keep checking each other, and will figure this all out together!

The cutting directions worked perfectly for me, too. I don't have everything together yet, but I'm over halfway through and have exactly the right number of pieces. I'm trying so hard not to rush! I have a bad tendency to work too fast because I'm so anxious to see my results!

As cutting errors appears...can you correct the PDF-file or put up a correction under the BOM page? I do not know if a lot of people comes here to check out if their cutting is ok  ..And it will be greate to have a download of the correction in connection with the BOM page for all of us that has not started yet.

Hanne-Grete, it turns out that this is was a false alarm! The pattern is correct.

Sue and I have both been over the instructions numerous times, and I don't think there are any errors, but if any do crop up, we hope you will let us know and we will definitely make any changes necessary to the PDF files and will make every effort to let everyone know about it.

I did find an omission in the cutting directions for the alternate block. the off-white 2 7/8 and 1 7/8 squares should be cut in half on the diagonal.

GOOD CATCH!! Sue is out of town for a few days, but when she gets back I'll point it out to her and get the PDF files updated for anyone who hasn't downloaded them yet. THANKS!!

BTW...if you look at how I did my HSTs you will see why I missed this when I was "testing" the pattern!!

I looked at the show and tell, and thought why didn't they catch it? I have tried many methods of HST's and when I was cutting I thought about it, then I said to myself there aren't that many, suck it up. It actually helped me to stay focused and be precise. Especially since I was in a real big hurry to see the finished block.

                          Hi everyone,

I am a very keen novice from the uk and am quite new to the quilting world, have not attended any tought courses so am learning as i go along so please, forgive me if my question seems a little obvious.

Do you need to secure the end threads when paper peicing , i have concerns that you don't seen to get much cross over on seams to secure the stitches ?

                          :?

If the stiches are small enough that the paper is easy to remove they will be fine, but if it makes you feel better, you might want to backstitch the first few. No quilt police here, and rest assured that you are not the only one with questions!! Glad to have you join us!

Well, I seem to have a few HST left...I think I cut too many ..like double..I think I lost count when cutting them out..I hope I can use the white back ground color in one of the other blocks..or just will add them to my bits and pieces collection. Other than that, everything worked out pretty good..patiently waiting for the next block to be posted.
