Glad you liked it, Heather! Always remember that there is more than one way to get something put together! Keep trying new ideas until you find one that is right for you!
Sue's directions for the 2009 BOM are even more detailed than for the appliqued one we are working on now, if you can believe that! However, I will also be adding some alternative techniques for some of the blocks in case anyone is interested. I had never done paper piecing before, and like you....really don't like dealing with removing the paper, but that part really wasn't too bad, and I must admit that the accuracy is impressive! But...I couldn't leave well enough alone, and will offer something else for you to try. With that said, I will say that for the center feathered star, I wouldn't even attempt it with traditional piecing. With Sue's directions it went together perfectly! If that star looks like more than you want to tackle, she offers a simplier design as an alternative that will go together faster. With alternative blocks for each element, we could all wind up with really different looking quilts! This is going to be fun!

OK I need a little cheese with that wine. I want go to Houston someday but you all know how that goes. Sometimes fabric is your first priority and of course eating and paying the mortgage. Of course I was there in spirit.

Hestia, Like most people, I like the accuracy of paper-piecing, but not the paper-pulling afterwards. Then I found Judy Mathieson's book 'Mariner's Compass Quilts' and she explains how to just fold the paper out of the way and stitch next to the fold. I love this technique and plan to use it on the '09 BOM. You can get great accuracy this way (just look at Judy's quilts!) without all the fuss. You still have almost 2 months to check out this technique before the BOM starts - it may be just what you need to take away any hesitation you may have!

Anoher member mentioned that she does hand work paper piecing. That is an interesting idea. Does anyone know how that is done? This sounds like a way to get the accuracy of paper piecing while still doing hand piecing. I'd like to know more about how this technique is done.

What do you all think about using something like Ricky's Stable stuff for the foundation paper in the paper piecing and then just leaving it there. It does just kind of wash way into not much of anything.
I just happened to think of this, and wanted to hear what some of you think of this idea???
Do you think it would work?
Ricky does have sheets that are precut to the size of paper, ready to run through your printer.

I do foundation piecing by hand. I cut muslin 8.5 x 11 and iron it onto freezer paper. Then I print the foundations onto the muslin using my laser printer. I use a running stitch to sew the pieces on and stab and stitch the pieces together so that I go through the lines on both pieces. I always had problems with sewing through the line on the back when I did it by machine. Both the stained glass quilt and the pinwheel quilt on my profile were made this way.

I've used Judy Mathison's book and love her technique with freezer paper! I started using her method for Carol Doak's patterns 'cause it eliminates the tear away, even tho it is easy if you use Carol's paper.
I leave Ricky's foundation paper IN my machine applique for the Sue Garman BOM on my profile. I use the Sharon Schamber method of glue turned under edges and invisible machine applique. If you soak the block for about 3 hours after applique, the paper gets very soft. Or you can just wait until you wash the quilt when all done.
I personally don't do anything that isn't going to be washed i.e. wall hangings, so don't know about display stuff.

Heather, Ricky's Stable Stuff would work great for the paper piecing foundations, and it easily runs through your printer! I'm glad to see lots of techniques being tried!

Oh Boy! Thanks Ruth for checking into that. I was kinda of considering starting late again but after getting so far behind this year, I didn't want to do that. But if we could get Alex' fabric early, I would be very, very happy to get some!

I just received the 2009 BOM fabric kit. The fabrics are amazing I can't wait to get started. I love the quality of the fabric and I don't think I could have picked any better.Highly recommended!!!!
