Oh my goodness. I just am getting a very late start, too and came on to ask the same question. Wash or not? Starch? I am tempted to go through the process, as this is going to be a beautiful quilt when done and years from now I wouldn't want a grandaughter or great grandaughter to have all the colors run when they wash. Is this valid?

I have washed and starched my fabrics using the method Margo suggested for the Wot RoTTs because her way makes pressing so EASY! That is, wash the fabric, spray it with starch, lay it on a beach towel to dry and then press with steam. I am not experienced in piecing, and starch has made piecing so much easier. My fabrics are dark red background with beige and grey details for a scrappy look so I wanted to make sure I minimized any possibility of running fabrics so I washed them all. After so much work, it would be a shame if the colors were to run.

as i don't have much space and carpets everywhere but the bathroom and kitchen, i don't spray-starch, but dip the fabric in a starch-water mix (about 5-10x the amount recommended for starching laundry), then hang them on a clothes-rack in the bathtub.... any drips just rinse off, fabrics dry over night, and i have no mess anywhere in the apartment
