I think the reason for trimming the gray border down after attaching it to the center is so the pieced border will fit well. The gray border is just a floating border that can be cut any width needed to accommodate the pieced border so that it will fit.

Month 4 finished. My grey floating boarder needed to be 3/4" and the entire piece measures 30 1/2" x 30 1/2" from raw edge to raw edge. Happy with the results.

I finished month 4. I'm so glad I read forum comments about the gray border before I started as it prepared me to be more careful when cutting and sewing. I made the outer square-in-square borders first to be sure I got to the ending measurement, then cut the gray border 1.25 inches to give me the finished 3/4".
It all worked out OK thanks to the heads up.
FYI- I just got back from MQX (machine quilters expo) where I bought a Clapper- solid wood block that you lay down on top of a seam you've just ironed (steamed or spritzed). Wood absorbs the moisture and weight presses down. Seams come out FLAT! With all the seams in the border for month 4 (and more coming) I'm definitely going to be using my clapper to get a flatter, more finished look.

As for using a clapper for getting seams nice and flat (smacks hand to head) I really should have remembered that, it is a tool that I was introduced to years ago when I started tailoring and is used to aid pressing garments without scorching them.

I have finished Month 4 borders and am rather happy with the way my quilt is coming along. I love the quilts that have been posted so far. I have made mine with an Australian theme.
