How much bias binding for scallops?

This looks like a good tutorial - and the scallop curves are not too deep which must be easier to do. It does look like such a fiddly process, not sure I will ever try it. I guess if you don't cut away the scallops before you put the binding on then if it doesn't work out you can always just bind it in the usual way....maybe with a curved edge on each corner seeing as you have all that bias binding?

Thanks Margo, your table runner/wall hanging(?) made me laugh. I love how you put the direct links to help! I had looked it up but was waiting for later and to decide which bits were applicable to my work (nearly said problem!). Did you see I finished the cross-hatched border, one side is a bit wonky but the calculator paper plus the setting triangles ruler made light work of it. What surprised me, because I had never done it before I suppose, is that you have to be really careful as all the quilting lines are on the bias. Machinger gloves really helped with that and I was also surprised NOT to have a pain in my hands from constantly stretching open my thumbs and forefingers. Go figure? Here are 2 pics, before and after. Only one side was less than perfect! I hope you don't think I should unpick the wonky side, it's on the outside border which will hang down on the side of the bed, my sister doesn't quilt and if she notices she won't mind!

That's just the thing isn't it? I have had to teach myself not to say what is wrong with my quilt but to let people look and say how nice it is!

Thanks Lorna, I'll look at that too and then I shall have hysterics from information overload! :lol: Seriously I do find that it is hard sometimes to pick the method when so many sincere and helpful people on blogs and in tutorials tell you how to do something in different ways, my gut goes with NOT cutting the scallops before putting the binding on although the lady on Missouri Quilt Company was really nice and made it look like a walkover. Maybe there should be a new saying in Quilting, if it looks easy it isn't! Thank you very much for your input it is really appreciated, If it wasn't for TQS members helping me I should be in a right pickle down here in Venezuela!

I agree with the part that if it looks easy it isn't. Sometimes it takes practice, practice, practice. Go with your instincts and choose the method that makes the most sense to you.

This was my first and last project using scalloped binding which was at least 5 years ago. Not that I'm afraid of it, there just hasn't been a quilt since then I've needed to use it on. I don't remember what method I used but do remember googling for it. I had years of experience with clothing construction before I started making quilts so it wasn't that hard for me. Obviously my scallops were already there, but I'm sure I left some extra backing fabric until after the binding was added since I tend to do that on most quilts anyway. I would baste around the scallop first, or at least use lots of pins.

With Sharon's directions and videos that Margo shared, I didn't think it was that difficult. Definitely more time consuming than 4 straight sides. This is a vintage top I bought at an auction at my quilt guild in San Antonio. I figured I could practice my quilting on it. I thought it was fun. The binding fabric was also practically vintage. It is a peach color dotted Swiss. I was so glad to finally find a use for it.

It was great that you asked the question about crosshatching because now I will know what to do if I ever do it. Lorna, that wedding ring quilt is beautiful. And I really love the binding you put on it. Annis, what a perfect way to use a scalloped edge, really lovely. Margo, getting ready for Easter? Great wall-hanging.

Agree with all you say, Rita. I have also struggled with crosshatching and this discussion has helped immensely. I need to get over my fear of marking on the quilt top and just do it!

I love Ajclapp's quilt with the Dresden plates all around it, how cool is that and I have a load of plates left over from this project when I decided not to use them!
Lorna that wedding ring quilt is amazing and as for putting the binding on, what a good job! Cross-hatching goes really quickly because you go up and down and around the whole quilt sometimes before you have to stop - that is when it is on a border. I will post again when I have washed it and all the Crayola Washable marker lines have disappeared. On Ankas Treasures tutorial the second part is very interesting and she shows how she put scallops on the short ends only of some small quilts and table runners, very effective and good for having a go! I have almost decided to do Bonnie Hunters method for cutting the bias strips, they all come out long and the same length so no waste or fiddly short ones and then Sharon Shamber's method for joining them as I always have trouble with the offset thing. Is Elmer's Glue something particularly special, could I use basting glue in my Roxanne bottle? We have washable washable white school glue here but it is called Elefante. More questions because I love talking with you all!

Roxanne's basting glue is fine. People just suggest Elmer's washable glue because it is much cheaper, at least here in the states. Any washable glue should work for you, but always make sure that it is washable. It's always a lot nicer if you can get all of these things out of the quilt when you are done!
